Hockey Player Aslam Sher Khan boycotts his participation in the Commonwealth Games 2010
An official boycott was called from the Commonwealth Games by the former Hockey Olympian champion Aslam Sher Khan. The athlete thinks that hosting such an event is a colossal waste for a third world country like India.
Talking to the reporters, he said that already 28,000 crores have been spent on the preparation of the Commonwealth Games and more will be spent when all the delegates arrive and the Games start. He gave this comment at the venue where the Queen’s Baton
for the Games was going to arrive in Madhya Pradesh. The champion said that the same amount of money should have been used on the thousands of abandoned development projects going on in the country. He added that if the government has so much to spare then
they should spend on the extremely poor people of India. As for the athletics of the country he said that if the administration would have spend the same amount of money to facilitate its own athletes, then India’s champions would have clinched more than 28
gold medals in the Olympic Games.
Since the preparations called for a huge deal of corruption creeping in the country, also now a leader of the Congress, Aslam said that if India was so desperate to host such a mega event, the construction of the infrastructure should have been contracted
with people with integrity and honesty. He is also of the view that the Organizing Committee of the Commonwealth Games is not fair and impartial.
Not just Aslam, but also other important sports personalities like Bishen Singh Bedi have also strongly criticized the Games. He also said that there was no need for the Government of India to commit to hosting an event on such a huge scale especially when
it has turned out to be a massive drain on the finances of the government. And also that the government is only focusing on the Games and other important issues of the country are being seriously neglected.
On the other hand, the Indian cyclists are upbeat for the Commonwealth Games. Even though, the chances of them winning any gold medals in the tournaments are very low, especially against the Australian cyclists, the enthusiasm of the Indian cyclists is unmatched.
Despite the lack of procurement from the government and the threat of dengue, the cyclists are working day in and day out for the medals they are contending for.
The first Indian cyclist to take part in an international cyclist event was Janki Das. He participated in 1938 Sydney Games. The Cycling Federation of India is not very hopeful that the host team will do a good job in the Games since 2 very strong cyclist
are suffering from dengue fever. The Indian is based in 27 members and are all set to take over the field from the 3rd to the 14th of October.
The main competition for the Indian cyclists will be coming from the Australian cycling squad. The Indian squad did not have a doctor, and this caused a delay in the treatment of the two cyclists who are suffering from the fatal dengue. These cyclists are
two of most talented and hardworking athletes, Somvir and Vinod Malik. Now that they have a doctor looking after them, the duo says that they feel better and are recovering at a commendable pace. It is very important for Somvir and Vinod to be in perfect health
before the Games start, since both of them are seen as the potential winners of the cycling tournaments.
Delegates from over 71 participating nations have already arrived in India and will move to the Games Village, especially constructed for them to lodge in during the Games. Currently, the athletes and other delegates are staying at various hotels and will
move to the Village situated on the banks of the Yamuna River after the Registration Meeting that will start today, the 16th of September. After missing many deadlines, the Organizing Committee has finally opened the venues for the players to practise.
