Question:

Hockey - Where to start?

I'm 15 years old (turned 15 this year). I'm 6' 3", ~180 pounds. I've never played hockey in a league and I want to start. I live in Canada, so it would have to be a Canadian league. Would I be good for hockey? Where would I start? Like, what league, just some local one? Then would I eventually get moved up to a higher league?

  1. I gotta agree with the two people above me but, I'm kinda in the same situation that you are (I'm trying to get back into it). I'd suggest doing some hockey camps that work on basic skills while doing home workouts, training, and finding open skates/skate and shoots. After that find a lower skill league (where I am there is Travel, A, and B, B is the lowest skill level) and sign up for it. After that, it's up to you if you stick with it or not. You would move up if you get good enough, but right now, don't worry about that.

  2. if ur a canadian why in the f#%!$ did u not start like 10 years ago?!

i live in dallas and i am 15 and ive been playing sense i was 4, but anyway texas hockey is suprisingly just as good as canadian hockey and many of my friends are just starting and they have improved tremendously over a time period of a couple months

i played AA last year and im going for a AAA team next year and from what i have seen it is very easy to jump into hockey at this age

my friends that just started a year or so ago are already playing A, so i would go for it and it shouldnt take you too long to get started just find a local beginners or house league as what we call it, in your area and sense you live in canada it should be easy to find but just start there and you should do fine.

And by the way im 6' 1" and 175 pounds and everyone hates playing me because they are scared to death because im larger than most players and stronger so anyone larger than me is going to make anyone they face s@$! themselves

    good luck!

  3. Can you skate?

  4. You are 15, from Canada and have never played hockey in a league? Isn't that against the law in Canada?

  5. Presumably you live in a town with a rink. The local Minor Hockey Association will be having registrations this summer. Contact them and sign up. If you need financial aid contact your local police department, Canadian Tire, Tim Horton's, or Lions Club. All are usually active in minor hockey in the local communities.

Good Luck and enjoy. Players not starting until 15 have gone on to pro careers but it is very rare. Many players starting late have stayed and enjoyed the game for life.
