I was thinking of getting, or asking for a hockey book for my birthday. What is a good book that you recommend?

  1. What type of book are you looking for?

A statistical study of the game?

Cyrenaica and Haley pointed out the best of these (Official NHL Guide and Record Book, Total Hockey)

A biographical account of the game?

Again, Haley pointed out a couple of good ones, "Grapes" is a good one if you are a Don Cherry fan.  Kevin Allen's 2000 book 'Why Is The Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's Pool' is a decent read as well.  Not the best book, but it has some good points.

  2. I'm currently reading "The Boys of Winter" by Wayne Coffey. It's an excellent account of the 1980 Miracle on Ice. Have fun!

  3. HOME GAME by Ken Dryden and Roy McGregor

or if you enjoy travelling, I would go with :

TROPICS OF HOCKEY by Dave Bidini (he's in a off-the-wall music band from Toronto called the Rheostatics, older people like me may recall their "Ballad of Wendel Clark" that aired on Much Music constantly in the mid 90s)

  4. Hockey Almanac

  5. I STRONGLY recommend "Total Hockey: The Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League" AND Any edition of the Official NHL Guide and Record Book published after 1993 because these are the ONLY NHL endorsed books on the market (and not because I contributed research to both of them).

Haley - both Total Hockey and Total NHL are perfect sit down and read books for hockey nerds everywhere - admit it Haley - you're a hockey nerdette!

  6. "The Game" by Ken Dryden was great!

  7. You should read Gordie Howe's book, I've heard good things.

  8. The word is out. The 100 Greatest Hockey Arguments by Bob McCown is going to be re released with a second printing this year. It will also come out in a Limited Edition Hard cover as well. The book discusses a number (100) of sacred cows and points of discussion.

Many of the question discussed in the book are argued on this forum. This is presented from a factual and rational view point.

It is a wonderful reference book.

  9. Now here's a great question...

The "Total Hockey/Hockey Encyclopedia" is a great option.  A few others...

"The Game" by Ken Dryden.  I love this book (and hate it); it got me into goaltending.  A fantastic read.

"Grapes" by Don Cherry.  Read it and you'll understand why Don is...well, Don.

"Tropic of Hockey" was interesting at times.

"The Code" is about the code of fighting.  A good read on how fighting works; great for making points with the "fighting is bad and should be banned" crowd.

If you're in America, "Boys of Winter" by Wayne Coffey is a well-written book about the 1980 US Olympic hockey team.

    Happy reading!

  10. Target online has a bunch of hockey books.....

  11. Total hockey and Total Nhl: The Ultimate Source on the National Hockey League are important for anybody to own, but they are not really "sitting down and reading" books.

Jean Beliveau: My Life in Hockey is one of my favorites, but that's because Beliveau is my favorite.

The Game, by Ken Dryden I would say is a MUST read.

Cyren:  You know me too well!
