  1. First off, I don't mean to sound rude but if you dont know where and when you line up in hockey are you sure you're playing the right sport?  But if you really want to know you line up after every whistle.  If it is a face off to start the game or a period the center man takes the faceoff with the right and left winger on either side of the faceoff circle, and the two defenceman standing about the blueline pretty much behind the two wingers.  The only time that changes is if the faceoff is in you're defencive zone, then it is pretty much the same but the defenceman closes to the goalieusually stands in front of the winger on the hash marks to try and stop the other teams winger from going directly to the front of the net.  And by the way the faceoff can happen in more than just the four circles, there are 9 dots on the ice and a faceoff can take place at anyone of the dots.

  2.

                            x              x

                  o                 o                o

                           o                  o

  3. There is a face off after every stoppage in play. For example the goalie freezes the puck then there is a faceoff. This also applies for icing, offside etc. The formations are a little trickier. At the center circle the formation is simple the centerman takes the draw the left winger stands directly across to the left on his own half of the ice and the right winger does the same on the right side. The defence are at the bottom of the circle on angles from the center. It makes a W with the three points at the top of the w being left wing, then centerman, then right wing. The two points at the bottom are the left and right d. In your own zone the same formation can be used or the winger can move off of the boards and line up in front of the oposite winger so he can rush the d if the faceoff is lost or lead the rush if won. The winger who plays the wing that the faceoff is on is the one that moves (left winger on the left side right winger on the right side). In the offensive end stick with the w formation. Hope i made that clear it's difficult when visuals cannot be made.

  4. simple answer: go watch a hockey faceoff on youtube.

Players line up for faceoffs, which happens in the beginning of periods, after goals, and after the whistle is blown for various reasons (penalties, icing,...).

Where you stand depends on your position. If you play forward, then you'll be standing along the line in your respective wing's side or taking the faceoff if you're a center. Usually the wingers face the centerman in case of a pass. If you play defense, you stand behind them. If you still aren't sure, just stand exactly opposite of the opposing guy on the other side.
