hi i just got a new pair of hockey skates so that i can practice skating before i start a learn to play hockey program that starts in october. my dad and i went ice skating last night and i noticed that i always seem to get off balance when i go over any rough spot in the ice. i was at least able to go about halfway around the rink without holding on to the boards but i had a hard time being able/comfortabe "gliding" and wondered if this will come easier with time and practice. also can you give me some tips on skating... i have not skated in years!!

  1. just keep going sakting and youll get it

  2. it will come soon enough. Just keep your knees bent just enough so that when you are not moving your weight makes you start to glide forward. Also with your arms, as you push with your left leg, put your right arm forward and pretend you are pulling a rope attached to the center of your body. your arm should not cross the center of your body.

  3. Basics...

Keep your knees bent, which should drop your butt down.

To start...bend knees, and have your feet at a 45 degree angle (if pointing straight ahead is 0 degrees, point each foot out 45 degrees- move your right foot to the right, left foot to the left).

Keeping your knees bent, and not leaning forward will help with your balance.

Work on your balance off-ice; yoga, pilates (seriously), and if there are balance balls you can stand on...these all help with your balance.

  4. it should come in time. also take long strides for more speed
