Hockeyroos Coach eying Olympic gold
Hockeyroos (Women’s hockey team of Australia), which triumphed in the Commonwealth Games and completed its hat-trick of gold medals has raised the hopes of hockey fans and lovers regarding their chances in the 2012 London Olympics.
Australian Women’s hockey team has won three gold medals in the Olympics, two in the World Cup, three in the Commonwealth Games, six in the Champions Trophy and two gold medals in the Oceania Cup.
Newly appointed coach of Women’s hockey team of Australia, Adam Commens is positive of a gold medal in the upcoming mega-event in London. He is looking to take the women’s squad of Australia right to the top.
Adam Commens said that though it would be a difficult task to return the Hockeyroos to the acme of the game, however, he is satisfied with the progress of the girls so far.
Adam Commens is a former player of the Australian men’s hockey team and represented the Kookaburras in 143 matches. He was part of the team which claimed bronze in the Sydney Olympics.
Adam Commens was appointed as coach of the Belgium men’s hockey team in 2007 and led them to their first Olympics appearance since 1976, in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Adam Commens took charge of the Australian Women’s squad after the retirement of Frank Murray, who achieved a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games earlier this year in New Delhi, India.
Hailing from Wagga, New South Wales - which is considered the hub of hockey professionals, Adam Commens is considered to be one of the best young coaches in the World. His appointment as Coach of the Hockeyroos was announced last
week however he will formally take charge in January 2011.
To push up the ranking of the Australian Women’s hockey team, which is laying at a disappointing 6th will be the first task of the newly appointed coach, Adam Thomson.
Adam Thomson said that he was very excited about coming back to Australia, adding that he had spent six years in Belgium and increased the level of Men’s hockey squad of Belgium, which is a source of pride for him.
The Australian Women’s hockey squad could not qualify for the Champions Trophy this year as they finished at a humiliating 5th position in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Hockeyroos also performed disappointingly in the World
Cup earlier this year and could not qualify even for the semi-finals.
Commens describing his strategies said, “It would be foolish not to take up the chance to talk to Frank and tap into his thoughts about the squad and on the game. But I have been in constant contact with the assistant coaches and
I have watched all of the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games matches.”
Adam Commens further said that he wanted to train the new young talent for the London Olympics as they could play a major role in the tournament. The Gold medal was a great achievement in the Commonwealth Games, held in New Delhi
and it really boosted up the team’s spirit.
Argentina, the current World Champion, Germany (two time champions) and the Netherlands have knocked down the Hockeyroos in the women’s sport. Commens however, expressed positivity saying that the Women’s squad of Australia would
deliver results in the 2012 London Olympics and would revive their past glory.
The newly appointed coach rejected the impression that the standards of hokcey in Australia were flagging and elucidated that the Australians are best in the world and this would be proved in the upcoming Olympics.
Adam Commens is famous for his unique coaching style, which will definitely produce results and improve the level of hockey in Australia.
There are two years left to the London Olympics and time will tell whether Adam Commens will be able to continue the success of the Delhi Games or not.
