England manager, Roy Hodgson has admitted that penalty shootouts have gone on to become a phobia for the Three Lions, but he hopes to be able to get the team to overcome the odds, should they find themselves in the same situation in the future.
England have time and time again gone on to crash out of contests via a penalty shootout and no one is quite sure just what the problem is.
All the players on the team are brilliant penalty takers and while playing for their clubs, they tend to convert from the spot.
However, once the team heads into an all out penalty shootout, things seem to take a turn for the worst. The players fail to understand just what is going on and more than often, English teams fall out of club contests due to this reason.
It is exactly the same when it comes to the national team. The players can’t seem to overcome the failures of the past and this tends to have a massive impact on them, every time they step up to the penalty spot.
Hodgson hasn’t gone on to deny this fact and admitted that the team does suffer from its fair share of problems in penalty shootouts.
The Three Lions boss is reported to have said: "We've lost so many important matches on penalties that we know it's a national phobia"
“"When you are working with the England national team, the past is always going to weigh heavily - everything we do today is being compared with something that happened in the past.
"Unfortunately, we have lost two very, very important semi-finals on penalties. So that's going to be there during all my time as national coach and probably when a national coach comes 20 years hence he will be asked the same question as well - unless we
start winning them."
With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749’s next opponents, there is a high probability that their game might end up going to a penalty shootout.
As a result, the manager needs to get his players to practice from the spot as much as he can and then hope for the best, should they have to settle the game via the penalty spot.
