Hodgson confirms Gerrard and Agger will return against Fulham
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson said he was hopeful that Red’s skipper Steven Gerrard and central defender Daniel Agger would be fit in time for the clash against Fulham next weekend. Liverpool have been managing fine without the two, but their return will undoubtedly
strengthen the squad and add more depth to Hodgson’s side.
Steven Gerrard picked up an injury against England’s friendly against France over a month ago and has not been able to play since then. There were rumours that Gerrard would return to lead his side against Newcastle United this weekend, but Hodgson rubbished
the speculations. The Englishman confirmed that Gerrard was ruled out for the clash against Newcastle.
Hodgson said while speaking to reporters, “I don't know where the stories came from that he would be fit for Newcastle. We have always been thinking he would be fit to face Fulham the following weekend; it would be much too early to consider him for
Newcastle. He is making very good progress, which we are happy with, and is absolutely on schedule but Newcastle was an unrealistic target.”
However, Hodgson is hopeful that Daniel Agger will have recovered in time for when Fulham visit Anfield next weekend. Agger has been a long term absentee and there was no news on his comeback previously. Hodgson has now revealed that the Denmark international
maybe very close to making his return, as soon as next week.
Agger has been suffering from a calf injury since September and was expected to be out for a couple of months. In fact, he was expected to be sidelined for a further two weeks, but he seems to be making progress on his recovery and will most likely return
against Fulham with captain Steven Gerrard. Hodgson was pleased with his improvement.
He said, “He is much better and really pushing himself beyond what we could expect him to do. His attitude is first class and we are targeting the Fulham game. The sports science people tell me it is too soon and he needs a bit longer, but in my conversations
with him he is in agreement that Fulham is not out of the question and he is pushing for it.”
