Hodgson hopes for investment
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has spoken of his frustration with the club’s ownership situation. With the club up for sale, and still no nearer to a prospective buyer despite concrete interest last month, Hodgson was unable to make the most of the summer transfer window.
At the moment, Liverpool seems to be treading water, and is in genuine danger of missing out on the coveted top four for a second season running, as their rivals continue to strengthen. Hodgson said, “I'm pretty sure that it won't be difficult for us to start achieving things again, (once the club is sold) but at the moment the task is really to hang on to the players we've got and make certain we don't have a situation where we have got a total rebuilding process.”
The danger is, the longer the club stays out of the reach of the Champions League, the harder it is going to be to force their way back in. Players like Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard may well go elsewhere in search of Europe’s elite competition, while the club will struggle to attract names of similar stature if they only compete in the Europa League. The club’s finances will suffer and as Hogdson alluded to, the club would have a major rebuilding process on their hands.
With Manchester United delicately poised to overtake their north-west rivals in terms of league titles won, Liverpool fans are desperate for the ownership situation to be sorted, and for the new owners to inject the required funds as soon as possible. At the moment, the club is in limbo, and this season looks increasingly likely to emulate last year’s calamitous campaign if things do not change. That ever-eluding 19th title must seem further away than ever for those Anfield regulars.
