Question:

Hold 'em hand ranking?

I was playing hold 'em in an online card room and the flop contained four spades, ace high. Since everyone was checking, it seemed as though a flush was the best hand anyone was going to get. I had the 3 of spades in the hole so I placed a bet. I wasn't concerned about the high card, because the ace was in the flop. Another guy had the 6 of spades and won the pot. I was curious but too embarrassed to ask in the room so I came here...

My question is: When two players have an ace-high flush and four of the flush cards (including the ace) are in the flop, is the winner determined by which player held the higher suited hole card?...

...Or does the side card determine the winner? (We each had a king, so in this case it didn't matter...)

Oh, by the way, he did not have a straight flush...

  1. if i understand you correctly you had the 3 of spades and he had the 6 of spades and the flop was the 3 spades and then the turn was a spade  and what ever the river card was then he would win because the 6 beats the 3 i have been in so many tournaments that i know basically all the rules for no limit hold'em

  2. Ok I know how to play hold'em I'm just not good with the lingo so bare with me.

The other player won the game because although you got a flush with a 3 of spades and had a king high, he had a 6 of spades and a king high which trumped your 3 of spades.  Thus meaning he had the "high" card and won the game.  This is because basically your two high cards (the kings) canceled each other out, you couldn't use the ace because the same thing would happen with the kings, and so the "high card" went down to your second card.

Hope I understood you right and was able to answer probably.  Also in the future don't be afraid to ask the people in the game.  They won't care to help you if you ask politely.

  3. In hold'em, you are making the best five-card hand possible with your hole cards and the community cards.  If the board has A-J-10-8 of spades, a player needs one more spade to make a flush.  Who ever has the higher spade will make the better hand.  If player A has the 3 and player B has the 6 the hands are now :

    Player A - Ace-J-10-8-3

    Player B - Ace-J-10-8-6

Player B has the better hand, the kickers are irrelevant.
