Holdems flush?

Question

i was playing holdems with my brother and i won with a ace high flush,4 spades came up on the board and i had the ace of spades in my hand to make the 5th card and to make the flush,but my brother said i can only win a flush if i have two of that suit in my hand,say an ace of spades and a 2 of spades,but i only had the ace of spades and a 5 of diamonds,i thought aslong as u had the highest card of the flush u won regardless wether u were holding one spade or two,who was right

The easiest way to remember is like the guy above me said.  It is the best 5 card hand possible.

Best way to do it is when the hand is over turn your cards face up on the table and look at all seven cards (your 2 and the five on the table) then push away the two weakest cards.

Your 2 cards and the 5 community cards have the same value (as far as strength of hand go) so until you get comfortable reading the board just turn your hand face up and go from there.  Its simpler that way.

in holdem, you win with the best 5 card combination, regardless of how many are in your hand (you can even play the board.)

your brother is probably referring to omaha.
