Holding on to the stars – an Arsenal critique: English Premier League special
The summer transfer window is edging closer to a close. There was much anticipation and hype around potential Arsene Wenger’s signings for the coming season. Initially it did seemed like things might actually be different. But, Wenger is yet again doing
what he knows best. He is being conservative in his approach and probably will not make any high profile signing – http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 rarely have.
Wenger has been successful in the past with his transfer philosophy. That has been the Arsenal way of doing business. Interesting thing is that it might even work in the future as well. But their biggest dilemma will remain. Arsenal will continue to cultivate
and grow young potentials, turn them in to professionals only to lose out on their top guns.
Currently it is exactly what is witnessed with the Gunners. Cesc Fabregas, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604, Manchester City and Manchester United are the likely new clubs for each of these.
In the process, Arsenal will look to rebuild, yet again, and other big spenders will look to gain. That is what is common between these three. They all are heavy spenders during the transfer windows. Wenger will be left scratching his head. He will again identify
new and cheap talent and hope that it will pay off as it always has.
The shrewd investment is ‘ok’ when you have time. That is just that luxury that has evaded Wenger this time around. The frustrated fans have been calling for the club owners to cut him loose. If there is a repeat of what happened in the last season then
the axe will surely fall on Arsene Wenger. The fans are obviously fed up with Arsenal’s strategy that looks to save them pennies instead of spending higher to get a player with better profile.  This approach has slowly seen Arsenal’s failure to keep pace with
other big spenders and has eluded them trophy-less for a little too long for anybody’s liking.
Manchester United and Barcelona are the most successful clubs. They are also the biggest spenders. They not only bring in young players and nurture them, but they also do all they can to hold their stars back.
Money may not necessarily buy the trophies but it can definitely buy the talent required to be on the road to glory. When you do not spend, then the quality of your purchase is found lacking. Same is the case in football and Arsenal are a true reflection.
Their http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Defence-c38904 was anything but strong and it constantly leaked goals. The drawn game between Arsenal and Newcastle United earlier this year will always bring back haunted memories to the Gunners. Their loss in the Carling Cup was just as shocking.
Lack of proper spending means there are holes in the team’s line up. The holes have transpired in to trophy less draughts. All players want to be part of a winning team and lift silverware. They eventually move out to clubs that they know they can win with.
Manchester City may be an exception but it is still generally true.
The tradition and history that precedes Arsenal as a football club is too rich for them to be completely termed as a feeder club. But over the years that is exactly what Arsenal has turned in to. Arsene Wenger has been too shrewd, the cynics call that conservatism.
Whatever the term may be, it is costing Arsenal dearly and they need to learn to hold on to their stars.
