what do holding tanks cost and how hard is it to do it yourself

My first answer was an educated guess from the symptoms you listed.  I would hate for you to spend money on a tank and that was not the problem.  If you tap on the tank and it fills full it probably is waterlogged.  Another symptom is if you see condensation on the majority of the tank it's waterlogged.  This means there is no air in the tank to provide pressure for the reservoir of water in the tank.  If you're mechanically and electrically inclined it's not too very hard.  I priced tanks at Lowe's $175 and Home Depot was less than $150.  Of course there are different size tanks and the prices will vary.  The larger the tank, the less the pump will have to cycle on and off as there is more water for you to use or draw down before the pump has to come on and refill it.  If you have the type tank with a bladder,  swapping out should just be a matter of removing the old one and reinstalling the new one.  This link should be able to answer a lot of your questions as they have great pictures of different systems.  http://www.inspect-ny.com/water/Water_In...
