  1. First...you need to eliminate the plumbing lines as a possibility. You don't give a rate of loss here so I'll let you in on a simple test to eliminate the lines as a source of the leak. You'll need to shut off your pump for 24 hours and install your winterizing plugs into the skimmer and returns. T tape the plugs just like you would for winterizing. Mark your water level with a pencil or piece of duct tape at the skimmer. Check the level 24 hours later. If it has still gone down, you have a liner leak. If it hasn't moved or moved less than 1/8th or so, then the issue is in your plumbing lines. Now call a pro in to find out which one and exactly where if it's the plumbing.

If it's not the lines, read on.

Visit your kitchen cupboard and grab some food colouring or you can use an expired bottle of phenol red ( your pH testing reagent). I prefer the phenol, since it's not as thick and hey..if it's expired, there's no other use for it except in the garbage.

Grab a mask and fins, turn off the filter pump so that it isn't the cause of your dye moving and go hunting. Use a squirt of the dye in any suspicious areas. If it gets sucked in, there's your leak.

There are some areas you can check first, that seem to be popular spots for leaks. If you have kids...check around the main drain or deep end first. Kids tend to use a vac pole to get items off the bottom. The usually never put an attachment like a net or brush on the end and they ALWAYS forget about light refraction in water and miss that mask, fin strap or toy on the first stab. It leaves a nice "smiley face" hole, oddly enough, the same size as the end of the pole. I find about 80% of leaks in 2 minutes or less by asking if the person has kids once I'm in the water.

After that, comes under ladder bumpers, around built in stair stripping, looking for cracked return plates and skimmer face plates. Next are pool lights. After that, and no result it's a complete search of the bottom and walls. Keep a coin with you to drop on the spot if it's on the bottom. It'll help you locate it when you go back down with the patch. Check the seams, including the one wall seam. Seams can separate and hopefully that's not your issue as they are buggers to properly patch.
