Why is it over the north pole and why is it now apparently shrinking?

  1. The hole in the ozone layer lies over the south pole.This is because of the lowest temperatures in the stratosphere over there.This lowest temperature causes what is called 'polar stratospheric clouds'.The cloud particles in these clouds are responsible for the chemical reactions which deplete the ozone layer.These clouds are not formed over the north pole due to comparatively high temperatures there and hence ozone hole is not found there.This ozone layer is shrinking as the use of CFCs(which are also responsible for the hole) are banned in some countries.


  2. It is actually over the South Pole.  We have been working to control the release of Chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere since the 1990's.  One site claimed that the smaller ozone hole is the result of milder weather.  I don't know whether or not that is true.
