Holiday at Christmas, in Germany?

ok looking for the most christmasy place, with lots of christmas activities to do? Somewhere like this:

My advice would be come come to Dortmund

there is loads to see and do

and the train system is great

just minutes on the train and you are in different towns

we have the biggest christmas tree in the world every year at our christmas market

im English and my Wife is german .And we live in Dortmund Germany

where ever you decide to visit

For starters, the Kristkindelsmarkt in Nurnberg.  Try to get there for the very first night... It's magical.  

Most every town will have their own holiday flavour.  Garmisch-Partenkirchen has an awesome christmas market, as does nearby Oberammergau.  

My suggestion to you is to hit Nurnberg for a couple of days, travel south to Munchen, then proceed to Garmisch and Oberammergau.   Bavaria is the place to be during the Christmas season.

some guy comes around, gets drunk, if he is in a good mood, maybe he carves a toy or something, if they have wood or sticks to carve, if the kids were bad, they just get a note that says "COAL", too expensive to buy real coal for bad kids, my Oma said they got just an orange if they were very very good, on a good year

some guy named pete comes along too, nobody knows why even, if the family is mean, maybe he takes things, instead of leaving them

there are oodles of places in Germany like the picture you show but i can only add to what has been said already...from my personal point of view ..... i have two places that are dear to me.....one in Bavaria and one in Austria where i am holidaying right now at my girlfriends in Graz..it is one of the oldest cities in Europe ..to be fair i almost live here when not working at home thanks to Ryanair..at Xmas time the city is thronging with people from everywhere and gluwein is the order of the day as you stand in the streets freezing your nads off with or without snow..(they don't do warm snow here)..there are trams running up and down and many Xmas market huts spread around the city centre and people are as friendly as they could be ...a guest house/restaurant outside of town where the local villagers gather would be great place to stay...........in Bavaria my favourite place is Kleeberg near Ruhestorf an der rott...a guest hose run by my friends Kurt  and Annamarie Hoelzlwimmer and their daughter and son in law  Manuela and Gunther Huber...they sell many Christmas trees from the guest house which Kurt has grown for many years now and there are festivals held in the stadl often (barn)....new years eve in Graz is amazing as it is below a city centre mound surrounded by old churches..i truly do not think this can be beat ....glad to add to your confusion and all the best .....fady

Honestly, the entire country does Christmas in a major way.  I could list a dozen places you could go - Dresden's Christmas Markt is wonderful, and it's the place that originated Stollen.  

I like a small town - Goslar is a favorite of mine.  They turn the side of the town hall into a gigantic advent calendar.  Virtually every town and city in Germany has some kind of Christmas Markt.  

Cologne's market in the square by the Cathedral is equally awesome, and there are others strewn throughout the city.  

A couple of years ago, my husband and I went to 10 different Markts.  

Rothenburg ob du Tauber is another place - with Kathe Wolfhart all over the place.  

The entire country is a very Christmassy place - so I'd pick my location based on other criteria - and then research the local Weihnactsmarkt.

in berchtecadener land  especially in bertesgaden   its right in heart of the alps and at christmas it is beautiful in downtown there are lights ans trees are up and lots of activities to do like berchtescadener markt christmas and theres lots of snow in the alps and its just beautiful so highlt recommend berchtescaden oh and its 25 km. from salzburg and thats where mozart was born and its really nice there too

Without doubt its Dresden for me the oldest Christmas market in Germany.Well worth your time is the ancient Saxon Market eat a wide variety of things made the old fashioned way,something the Euro Bigots in the UK would not allow.In the whole of Germany people know how to celebrate Christmas unlike the UK where a Christmas Market consists of the same Asian Gentlemen selling cheap tat as any other week of the year.

Any big city has a Christkindlmarket  in December.

Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Dresden, Nuernberg, Muenchen, Berlin, Hamburg, Koeln, Mainz, just to much to name them all.

If you want snow with it, there is no guarantee, but in the higher regions of Bavaria and near the alps is a good place to start.

I would suggest Augsburg. The Christmas Fair is awesome and usually you get snow, because it is in the southern part of Germany.

You are also close to Munich. And if you like skiing or snowboarding the Zugspitze is not far away.
