Holiday entiltement for uk?

i'm wondering if anyone can help me.

i read up on the internet and spoke to our accountant who deals with our pays, holiday etc. she told me that i and my other work mates are aloud 20 day holiday and + 8 public bank holidays which makes it 28 holiday day.

but my boss at the moment thinks that it is 24 day hoilday minus 8 public bank holidays off that which leaves me with only 16 days per year, and as i work along side the council we are shut for 8 day which i have to take as my holidays.

so i'm only stuck with 8 days through out the year

is my boss telling the true or is our accountant right ?

  2. The boss is wrong, you are are allowed the 8 bank hols (which you have to take) leaving 1 day over and then 24 days which means in total you are allowed 6 weeks.

  3. its usually 20 days + bank hols, some people get more which can be related to an extra day for each year worked up to a max of 25 - it depends, each company is different. If your company has set times when you have to take them then that can be taken out of your allowance, ie some factories shut at Xmas so you have to take a week of your holiday then. I am not sure whether the bank hols are your right legally, I think there is a loophole which means companies can make you take them as part of your allowance or just not pay you but this would be very unusual - you would need to get your contract checked by a solicitor or try the Citizens Advice Bureau.

    At the end of the day if your boss thinks he's right there's not a lot you can do if everyone else is working to those rules other than find a better job.

  5. It depends how many days a week you normally work.  If you work 5 or more, your accountant's right.

    There is a minimum right to paid holiday, but your employer may offer more than this. The main things you should know about holiday rights are:

        * you are entitled to a minimum of 4.8 weeks (from 1 October 2007)

        * the entitlement will increase again to 5.6 weeks from 1 April 2009

        * those working part-time are entitled to the same level of holiday pro rata (so 4.8 then 5.6 times your usual working week)

        * you start building up holiday as soon as you start work

        * your employer can control when you take your holiday

        * you get paid your normal pay for your holiday

        * when you finish a job, you get paid for any holiday you’ve not taken

        * bank and public holidays in Britain and Northern Ireland can be included in your minimum entitlement

    seems your boss is right, sorry....

  7. Up until a couple of years ago, paid holidays were at your employers discretion, but now its supposed to be 20 days paid leave. the thing about Bank Holidays is still a bit vague. My son works in the courts, and there they count it as part of his holiday entitlement...but he does get 25 paid days (they have to take it in turn to work the occasional Bank Holiday)

    I thin k your accountant is right, and its something you should look into.
