Holiday in Italy? Have you been?

Question

I am going to italy with two friends to Italy in early September for a week. We're student but are not interested in bars/clubs, would rather actually see Italy (not a British version).

Any tips on how to see and experience as much as possible in such a short time? (e.g. trains/coach trips etc)

Where did you stay and visit?

It's a very varied place.  I like the North (lakes) area - it's touristy in places but not overly so.  The Amalfi coast is good, also the coast towards the French border.  That said, you might want to see the major sights, Rome Venice etc, so you have a lot to choose from.  Transport is generally good (the boat service on the lakes is the best way to get about).

Any where you go in Italy will be worth the time and money. It is a beautiful country, north / south it is all fantastic. What are you interested in? art is everywhere, food is delightful and most will speak English.

hi i'm italian  (and im a student too!) and i've taken  few friends with me a few times going back home  and they wanted the same thing as you so here are my suggestion:

fisrt of all, Italy is a HUGE country, that is  there's an awful lot to see (and do). i suggest especially if you are on budget you concentrate on either one area and you explore that area and stick to it, otherwise you could do the big cities but that's definetely more turisty...

if you decide to stick to one area, the options could be for example "the north" and you could visit, let's say, Turing one day, Milan the next, the lakes area the next and you go all the way down the Venice. in between these cities there are LOTS of little gems, it depends a lot on what you want to focus on. Verona, for example is lovely...and you could see Romeo and Juliet place. Mantova is likewise gorgeous..

in this way, you would have good idea of what the north lof italy looks like (coz italy like Britain changes a lot from north to south), and you would not waste entire days travelling (if you take the places i have mentioned for example, it's around 2 hours by train for each journey and you would save money taking the regular train). i think sleeping out it's the most expensive thing but you may be able to find hostels.

likewise if you fancy Tuscany (and if it's semptember i suggest you go bit southern than this) one tuscanian city per day will give you the opportunity to see it well.

if you fancy Rome and Naples same thing. choose in this areas what places if fancy going to (i suggest pompeii) take into account that Rome takes to two days to see it properly (the Vatican is worth a visit too).

if u want to do the big cities instead think that it takes almost 5 hours by train to go from Rome to Milan with the Eurostar (the direcy,  most expensive train). the regular train would take the whole day... i don't think it's worth the hassle!!

this is just as guidelines to clear up your mind a little bit, if u need a hand expecially with translations and stuff i can give you a hand.

I would recommend starting at Genova than get on a train and ride it along the coast. You can get off at any town along the way that you like. And the only ticket you will need is at Genova. Just buy a cheap ticket to a close town. You will not need to buy a ticket until you get to a major town. I got on the train @ 20 different times and was never asked for a train ticket. Everyone just seems to get on and off whenever they like. I really liked a lot of towns between Genova and Pisa along the coast. There's so beautiful and you can just get off the train and walk around town and to the beach within 5 minutes.
