Can anyone advise me if Perugia is the best place to stay in Umbria? I will be visiting with my siblings and my 87 year old mother and want somewhere pretty to stay. We will want to see Assisi. We want a pleasant hotel, good restaurants and, of course, some good shops! Thanks

  1. yes, perugia is the best place to stay in umbria as it is well connected to all the places around (sorry can't recommend a specific hotel but this site may help you: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h... ).

i studied in perugia, so here are my recommendations...

a gr8  inexpensive restaurant with a set menu of typical umbrian food is "dal mi' cocco" on the corso garibaldi (reservation required, u'll find the phone number displayed outside the restaurant. the food is as fabulous as the place looks unassuming from outside)

the "forno di ivana" on via ulisse rocchi has amazing dolci and snacks, plus they are one of the few bakeries that sell my favourite bread the "pane panda" (a WWF product with sunflower seeds.... drooool!!!)

"sandri" on corso vanucci has the best dolci. their window-displays are usually nothing short of works of art (and they taste just as good as they look!)

and "augusta perusia" opposite palazzo gallenga on via pinturicchio has the BEST ice-creams and chocolates

make sure u visit spello (small place, almost all shops and restaurants are lovely) and see the annunciation chapel decorated by perugino

the "osteria il guffo" on the via della viola is another inexpensive but gr8 place to eat

if you like shawarma/gyros, the best are at the even more unassuming "rosticceria garibaldi," where there are often traditional egyptian sweets or dishes. a very homely place with great, if simple food.

    enjoy ur trip!

  2. No, the whole Umbria is good. This region we call 'the green heart of Italy'. Perugia is very good, it is the chief city of the region, and the old city is very beautiful and full of student coming from all the world 'cause its international university. But all around Umbria there's villages and towns, and places, and landscapes, and panoramas unforgettable. Not only Assisi, but even Todi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Spello, and don't absolutely forgive Orvieto, there's a magnificent Duomo, the Pozzo di S. Patrizio, (S.Patrick well) and a very beautiful Etruscan necropolis. For hotels you can try at Centre of Information at the feet of the city. However it's better a hotel in the centre of the city if your mother is like mine, 87 years old, so you have even bus stop near you for eventually visit the city or other cities. May be you'd better go to a rent-a-car, so you are free to do what you want. Ciao and have good holiday.

    Italiano D.O.C.

PS - Good restaurant? Oh my God, you'd have difficulty to choose for, and don't forgive, in the morning, if you wanna have a good breakfast, you have to go to a bar and cakes, sit down at the sun and have a 'cappuccino con pasticcini' (pastries) or a good 'cioccolata con panna e brioche', (warm chocolate with cream and a brioche). Ciao.
