Holiday to Rome, advice?

Question

We would like to go to Rome for our summer holiday, but we would like to go to the outskirts of Rome (as it is cheaper) and we can drive about and into Rome when we get to hire a car.

Is there anywhere in the outskirts that is not completely quiet and slightly built up with restaurants etc.

Thanks :)

Any other information about Rome would be helpful.

My word, you are looking to drive in Rome. You are very brave my friend! I know of a brilliant hotel slightly away from the centre that is very reasonable. Its currently ranked 34th best hotel in Rome on tripadvisor. It is a few streets from Termini train station and only a couple of metro stops from the Forum, Colliseum etc. I'll put a link here (hope it works). It can be booked through Tripadvisor or through Expedia etc. I stayed there myself a few weeks ago and was very impressed.

Listen to what people are telling you, you are nuts if you are thinking about driving in Rome.  Most of the sights are fairly close together, and there is excellent public transportation.  The money you would save on a Hotel in the outskirts would be used up on the car rental and parking -- so you are defeating your purpose of saving money.  

There are some reasonably priced hotels in Rome you should look at that first.  

There are so many things to do and see in Rome that a decent guidebook is a very worthwhile investment.

Seriously driving in Rome.....!!!!!! Not a good idea, you won't truly appreciate the city sites because you will be scared for your life trying to drive.......The Metro underground is 3 euros for all day and you can get any where in the city within 20 minutes, as for the outskirts car is a good idea as the sites are amazing and the west coast beaches.......but most entertainment is in the built up areas......Don't forget to see the pope!!! every Sunday St Peters square. If going to Vatican city leave early massive queue to enter took me hour an half.....Hope this helps....

Funny, someone mentioned parking in Rome....is there such a thing...better yet, I guess theres more like...and overabundance of parking...when we visited in March 07...we saw not only double parking..but triple parking and then the vespas and mopeds were on the sidewalks as well..as we waited on a busy corner we saw a man get to his car, started honking his horn nonstop, waiting for the other cars driver to come out of where ever he was to let him move his car away...we even saw a couple Smartcars parked on the actual sidewalks...very interesting!

Personally, I cant see any point in renting a car for the city of Rome, the metro was easy to manuever, tho extremely cram packed and the buses were very reliable...infact my best suggestion...WALK, walk every where..we managed to walk from the Vatican City to the Termini...took us 4 hrs but we stopped along the way at all the fascinating shops etc and didnt find ourselves exhausted at all....WONDERFUL CITY !

There is a hotel on Via Aurelia called Parco Tirrenio, it is four star and it is far enough out to be easy to get to by road, and far enough in to be easily accessible from the centre. It has plenty of parking on site as well, which you do not get further in. Standard double rooms cost from £66 in August (incl. breakfast). The hotel has a small pool and a couple of restaurants.There is a metro station nearby and there are plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance on Via Aurelia. Driving in Rome centre is definitely NOT recommended, all the sights are easily accessible by metro and on foot.

One suggestion, though:  While it is a good idea to hire a car, I would not suggest that you use it to drive into Rome.  Rather, use it to commute between rail stations, and use rail to get into the city.

Rome is a wonderful place to visit..but as the other people said... to drive is madness..if you stay in the centre of Rome you will save money by not travelling ..we used that money to stay in the centre of Rome and everything is within walking distance....give it a little more thought...I can't with to go back :)

My advice to you would be.... stay at a hotel anywhere outside of Rome... BUT near a train station. Then you could have a car for going around italy... tuscany, pisa, sorrento, etc., but take the train into Rome. I'm telling you, listen to the people, Rome is difficult to drive around and downright dangerous. Lots of one-way roads and maps that don't make any sense. trust me, I've driven around Italy many times, Rome and Napoli are areas a tourist should not attempt to drive. But take a train is by far the best thing to do. If you don't, just make sure you get the INSURANCE on the rent a car. good luck, you'lll love Italy!
