Can anyone suggest somewhere beautiful to go (with a small baby) and just lie on a beach and relax and see the jungle...no high-rise hotels on the beach/spring break getaways etc?

  1. Nicaragua is too dangerous. Dont go there. Try Providencia in the San Andres achipelago. The islands belong to Colombia but are closer to Nicaragua. Providencia is super laid back.. tiny.. few cars.. excellent beaches.

try www.decameron.com to book an all included hotel.

  2. San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua. Absolutely no high-rise buildings there, or the entire country for that matter. Also, it is the safest country in Central America (google it for fact). There will be quite a bit of people, but does not get extremely crowded like other popular beaches in Latin America. The drive from Rivas (closest city; only 20min. drive) has spectacular views and the beach is beautiful. it is located in a bay.

There are also 3 other beaches all within 30min. of San Juan del Sur that are equally beautiful. Maderas, Majagual (my favorite), and Marsella. Also, La Flor is near, La Flor is where the endangered turtles lay their eggs starting late June/early July. All these beaches are in the Rivas department in Nicaragua, the only ones i would recommend in the Department of Managua (an hour away from the capital city) is Montelimar, it costs $55 for adults to enter since it is a private beach, but well worth it. The price includes a 1 hour rental of any motorized beach machine and buffet. All these are also relativaly east to get to.

Another beach (or actually entire Islands) are the Nicaraguan Corn Island which are located off the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. Here, the majority of people speak English, Nicaraguan Creole and Spanish. The water is clear blue with dark blue spots, the sand is soft and white and the islands are the best. Snorkeling and diving are possibilities, at a very cheap price. Big Corn Island would be my top recommendation.
