Holly Clyburn says Great Britain & Ireland can end Curtis Cup drought
Holly Clyburn has said that the players of Great Britain & Ireland have what it takes to defeat the United States in the Curtis Cup.
Clyburn is preparing to represent the Great Britain & Ireland in the Cup slated to begin from June 8 to 10, 2012, at The Nairn Golf Club Scotland.
Clyburn’s participation in the Curtis Cup, analysts said, will make a big difference in the field of the GB&I squad, as she is well versed in playing under tough conditions.
Speaking to the media about the looming battle between the two rivals, Clyburn said that their side has not been able to record enough victories in the Cup, but she is confident that they can win if they stick to their work ethic.
The last edition of the Curtis Cup dampened spirits of most of the GB&I players, as they let the United States walk away with the title for the seventh time in a row.
The Cleethorpes golfer said that facing seven consecutive defeats has obviously put a drag on the performance of the Great Britain & Ireland, but it can prove productive if the players stay focused on the course.
The GB&I side boasts a strong field, but it has not been able to display its usual game when facing the rivals, United States.
Analysts have said that the presence of Clyburn can work in the favour of Great Britain & Ireland.
They pointed out that she has been with the team for a long time now and knows what the Curtis Cup is all about.
Clyburn said that she is thrilled to represent her team once again, but pointed out that the United States is not going to let the GB&I hoist the title without putting up a tough fight.
"I'm over the moon and totally honoured to have this opportunity again. I do think we can win after seeing the way everybody performed at the (preliminary squad trial) training weekend,” she said.
Clyburn expressed her feelings about the prestige of the Cup, saying the tournament has a unique reputation among experienced players and rookies.
“The Curtis Cup is the biggest tournament an amateur can be involved in. Everyone wants to have it on their CV. In the last Curtis Cup, I produced the best golf I had played that year. I got my singles point on the board and felt I did myself, my family
and the team proud,” she said.
