Holy Candy to take time off after being pulled up in the Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar
The John Sadler trained, Holy Candy, was pulled up in the stretch in the second division of the Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar on 18th July, 2012, where he rode under Garrett Gomez. The connections are concerned and it hasn’t been
confirmed where he sustained the injury.
Sadler will not go into the specifics of the injury until a full diagnosis is made, but he said that the injury could be in the "high suspensory" ligament area of the left foreleg.
Sadler looks optimistic about his form and says that he will be fine, he commented that:
"We're going to do some diagnostics, some testing, X-rays and stuff like that. We don't have a complete diagnosis yet, but we'll have that in a couple of days. We did X-ray him last night and everything was clean."
Since he was pulled up, the son of Candy Ride will take some time off before he gets back to the track as Sadler said:
"The good news is he's going to be fine. He'll be given some time off. How much is yet to be determined."
Foaled by mare Spooky Minister, the sophomore has competed in seven starts since his season began and, he landed his sole victory in the maiden at Santa Anita on 23rd March, 2012.
Paired with jockey Joel Rosario, the duo completed the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 35.98 seconds, where he defeated the Bob Baffert trained, Eaton Hall, who was teamed with rider, Martin Garcia.
Owned by the Craig Family Trust, the colt participated in the Grade 3 Affirmed Stakes and landed a commendable finish in third, where he lost the victory to Nonios, who finished first and Liaison, who finished second over the 1 1/16 miles.
This race was the three-year-old’s first race on turf. Gomez pulled him up in the final furlong when diverted from the course.
Holy Candy might have disappointed Sadler but, his juveniles Ballard Ruler and Life a Riley finished first and second in the five-furlong sprint on the opening day card.
