Question:

Home Air Unit is frozen?

I have a unit in the closet where the Heat and Air are both together. About a week ago the unit stopped blowing air out. I turned everything off and then once or twice every day since then I would turn the fan on by itself, it doesn't sound like it's kicking on like it normally would... Then I try turning the air conditioner and its the same... No Air will get pushed out, even with the heat its the same thing...

I open the front panel of the air unit to see the filter that slides in and out. There is Ice stuck to all the sides and the filter is iced in itself.

I'm waiting for a call back from a service person, but in the meantime I'm just wondering if anyone knows what could have happened the the unit to cause all this?

  1. It sounds as though the unit is frozen.  When you turned it off did you turn the ac off or just the fan switch?  It sounds like the ice has continued to build up.  The ice must be melted first.  Make sure the ac is off and the fan also because there will not be any air flow across it to cool the motor.

  2. check the blower motor and see if you can spin it by hand. Make sure it is off before you do it

  3. Either your filter is clogged or your refrigerant is low. It is not pushing air through the system. Does the fan kick on and off or do you just have ice? Clean the coils and change the filter. If that doesn"t work than you probably need a recharge from a service tech. Don't let them sell you extra stuff, just get it recharged and make sure it is not leaking out the freon. You might have a blown capacitor or relay somewhere. The capacitor looks like a tin can. If the top of it is blown out like a frozen coke can on then it needs to be replaced. About $50 and you can do it yourself. Just make sure you shut the power off to the unit first. It should have it's own breaker in your breaker box. Good luck and happy cooling.

  4. If the coil is freezing up the compressor is not going into defrost . The unit will send hot freon through the coil to keep it from freezing up sound like that part not working

  5. Easy change filter monthly also yearly clean fins of coils a shop vac works good but they also make a tool for this  be sure when cleaning not to bend over the coils this will damage unit. Also it could be frozen up do to a cloged drain line.
