Question:

Home Day Care Verses a Daycare Facility?

I currently run a daycare doing infant care from my home. I keep asking myself if I should just go work for a facility rather than doing it from home.

Has anyone done either or both? What do you prefer... working for a facility or for yourself? I just adore infants (0-24mths) but I'm affraid if I go to work for a facility, that they may move me to a 3-5 year-old room. Any advice??

  1. you will make more $$ by working at home and will be in charge of what is going on and what you do. i would rather work at home then in a facility

  2. :-)  I've done both. Presently I'm licensed in my home.

There is more stress at home...definately...one can never "leave" the job.  :-)  It effects your whole family.  But then on the other hand I'm my own boss...I do not have to spend on gas or child care, etc.  What I liked about the center based was the space and equipment.  At home I can not provide what I would like to because of space...it has to be in my main living area so I'm waiting for the day I can do a group home-preschool only from a basement or something similar :-)  We also don't make much $$$ so I can't purchase what I really would like to purchase for the children.

You are going to get more 0-24 months in family child care I have found.. (that is not my speciality :-)).  As for whether they will put you in a 3-5 year old room... I would suggest you be very open and specific with them.  For the most part they want to put you where your strength is...but in day cares I find that they tend to rotate teachers so often.  It drove me crazy!  I could be in 3 rooms in one day.  I did NOT care for that.  How much education do you have?  Can you get education in the infant-toddler area?  Find a well-reputed early childhood center that has specific teachers for the specific rooms.  They tend to hire specifically for each room whereas a day care will hire a person and consider them floaters.

    Good luck.

  3. it really depends on you. I have done both but prefer working at a day care facility because when I want to take days off I just have to let my boss know and she takes care of it. But if you dont like to be bossed around then it may be better for you to stay at home. At the place where I work they asked me what age group I prefered so that is a little bit of an advantage.........
