Home School Options?

Most of the people my school dislike me. This is the 1st year in my life where i have no good friends at all. I tried making friends but alot of the people were mean and some even stabbed me in my back. My whole day going to school is i go to school, do nothing important except for in english and then go home. Alot of classes i have are extra classes that are boring so i'll just sit their and do nothing. Im finishing up my junior year but i want to get into a homeschool before my senior year, ive been planning to do this all year. I don't think my mom will go for it but i don't want to waste 7 hours of my day to go such a horrible place. I can't imagine doing it for another year. How should i bring this up and present her with a good plan??

  1. slowly like say like mom well like no really wants to be my friend and like skool is really hard for me because i have no really good friends and everything thats bothering shell probly say o well its not like that now thats when you bring up acidemics .......

sorry that how things are going for you thats how things used to be for me and then i decied to just be by my self and make people wanna be with me ...it worked

  2. I'm sorry people are mean to you.  I work in the public schools, and it tears my heart out to see kids who are alone either by choice or by circumstances.

Your first homeschool assignment will be to find out the laws in your state.  If you live in a homeschool friendly state, you can create your own curriculum.

What are your goals?  How do you learn best?

Do a complete research project and present it to your mom.

Did you do a Junior project at school this year?  If so, give your mom a presentation just as you did your Junior project.

Good luck to you.   I think you can make this happen.

  3. If you only have one more year left, try to make some friends. it's only one year and once your done you won't have to do it. I wouldn't do homeschooling cuz that limits a lot of things. You only have one year left so i suggest just sticking it out:) good luck

  4. You should decide what kind of homeschooling you want to do. I am homeschooling now, I have a on-line school that gives me my classes and I can do them at any speed. You can also do it by just getting the text books you need and do the work or do that through a program that you can go and get help from a teacher.

My school is Laural Springs if you want to look into it.

  5. Excellent suggestion by Janis B.

Decide how you would like to do HS, online course, unschooling, whatever, find out all about it and how it would work for you and then present your plan to your mom, making sure to include how horrible you've been finding PS and what a waste of your day it is. Highlight the better academic results of HS.

  6. Janis B has a great answer.

I'd like to add to her answer. In your project that you present to your parents, also include information on the following things:

    1) How will you pursue your social life? You are almost and adult, and you have a lot of control over your social life. Are you planning on sitting in your room all day playing WoW? (I love WoW, but I know that having a social plan will give your parents more confidence that you know what you are getting into.) Think about interests that you have outside of the house, like sports or clubs, where you will be around your friends, doing something constructive, and fostering relationships.

    2) Also think about how you will fill your time. You say that you spend a lot of time at school doing not much of anything. If you suddenly have that time to yourself, what will you do with it? What do you do on the weekends and in the summer? Do you spend your time wisely? Can you use your history of self-direction as a selling point? If not, can you change your behavior now, and include more self-motivated activities on the weekends and after school?

    3) Do you have a strong interest in something that you wish you had more time to pursue? Perhaps you've been working on remote control planes, or you've been writing a book. Or perhaps you play the guitar, or volunteer in your community. How would having a lot of free time to pursue your own interests help you grow as a person?

    4) Think about college. Even if you don't intend on going to college right after high school, understand, in great detail, how homechoolers get into college. This will be a HUGE selling point to your parents.

    5) Lastly, make sure that you ask your parents how much they would like to be involved in your education. If they aren't used to being all that involved, they might be worried that they can't teach you. Know what it means to be an autodidact and what that lifestyle looks like. And come up with specific things that your parents know, that you would like them to help you learn. Make sure that you can explain to them how you will be able to learn things that they can't teach you. Specific things. Not just, "I'll take a class." or "I'll look it up on Google". Give them names of the places that offer classes, how much it costs, titles of books, people who can help you., etc.

Your parents are not going to want to hear how you are running away from your problems. They will want to hear how you are making an attempt to better your life. If you do your research, and make it clear that your goal is to move towards something specific, and not run away from your issues, they will be more likely to listen and take you seriously.

And if they do freak out...don't react. Let them have their initial freak out. It's normal. Give them space to tell you exactly what their concerns are. Tell them you'll do more research to answer their questions. Take them to a homeschool conference, or leave them some literature from your state group. Don't argue with them. Show your maturity and listen.

You'll do great. And the worst thing that will happen? You'll figure out a bit more about who you are, and you'll have something to fill your time school when you're bored.
