Question:

Home School needs another term?

People automatically ASSume that all homeschoolers stay home all day, which I think is where a lot of the myth of them not being "socialized" comes from-all because it has the word 'home' in it. I think we should come up with another word, because the fact of the matter is, my kids are out of the house and learning in more environments with a wider variety of people than most kids in public school will ever know.....so any suggestions for a new term for homeschool that doesn't give them image of a kid locked in the house?

  1. Alternative Education

    Life Based Education

    World Based Learning

  2. Free-Form schooling.

    Diversity Schooling

    Non-traditional schooling

    Alternative Schooling

You do realize, however, that COLLEGES have a totally different picture and embrace homeschoolers.

  3. While I do agree that we need another name I am lost as to what it could be; at least in a way that would get across what we really do and who we really are.  We are not what hollywood often portrays us as (I am definitely not against hollywood, just their impression of us homeschoolers).  Also I totally agree with what kayla k. said!

  4. I agree!! but i cant think of one really. Unschooling is something I am looking into and I think it could taken lots of different ways.

  5. I've got a great idea--what if we called it Education.  That would definitely put its status above the public school system.

  6. I agree with Teri.  The name 'homeschool' is fine.  People just need to be educated and get out of the mindset that the only way to  teach  is to put 30 kids in 30 seats with one teacher doing schooling in one way, at one pace.

To me, this sounds like an inefficient way to learn.  But hey, we are talking about the government's way of doing things, right?

  7. Freeschooling.

    or Freedomschooling.

I love being homeschooled, I don't understand why people think that homeschoolers are locked up all day.  We get to go do more, and be out and about more, than the public school kids.

The public school kids are the ones I feel sorry for.  They're locked up in their school buildings for 7+ hours, and some have a 1+ hour bus ride home.

Sorry, but being on a forced schedule for 7-9 hours a day doesn't sound like freedom to me.

And the socialization thing; if you have to see the same kids everyday at school, isn't it the same as seeing your parents/siblings every day at home?  You're not meeting new people at school, unless a new kid starts every day.  You're more likely to meet new people while homeschooling, since you are able to go places during the day, that you wouldn't normally get to go if you were locked up at school.

  8. The problem is not with terminology, it is with attitudes. Seriously, you could call it "fly fishing" and some people will still choose to be ignorant on the subject.

The lack of understanding seems to me to be more of a choice to be that way than it is a lack of opportunities to learn more.

Try a little experiment. Next time you see someone come on here and bash the bejeebies out of homeschoolers and rant on about how unsocialized they are, take a look at their Q and A profile (if they don't hide it like a coward)

chances are you will see that they have been informed through this forum time and time again on how homeschooling really is, yet they choose to believe they are correct. AND chances are, this argumentative, "I am right so shut up and listen" attitude will be expressed in other areas as well, not just homeschooling.

  9. "Not wasting six hours a day with crappy teachers and kids who are rude and immature and instead learning using the ways that are best for me and getting individual attention and also having tons of free time to spend with friends and taking up hobbies" -schooling!

    Haha I'm with you..

  10. Life-long Learning.

    Life School.

    Family-based Education

    Home-based Education.

    Education.

    Real-world Education

    Everywhere School.

    Private School.

    Education by Living.

    School of the Real World.

    School Without Walls.

    Convertible School.

    Variety School.

    School at Home and Elsewhere.

    Elsewhere School.

    Everywhere School.

    School of the Limberlost

    Sometimes School Sometimes Not.

    School of Bliss

    Productive School.

    Vacation School.

Simply Studious and Sometimes Fun School.

Seriously, no matter what the name it is a wonderful alternative to the gov't institutions.

  11. home schooling has been around for centuries. public schooling only for a short time. who cares what people think, they're just jealous.
