I have posted a question before.. But I am still having trouble...

I don't know what to do.. Every year I get behind.. I am in 10th grade, 15 years old, the school isn't "to hard" or something, I just feel like when I get ready to do it, I haven't learned it.. I can't remember things very long, I can only remember numbers, for a long time... I don't know why.. but I try to focus... and I still can't...

  1. It could be that you aren't making use of your strengths. Determine your learning style.Try taking a multiple intelligences survey. Type those words into google search and you'll find the standard one as well as a ton of others, but all work the same way.

You say you're good at memorizing numbers. Find ways to apply that to other subject areas as well. Take Physics or Chemistry for science. In History, focus on remembering dates, lattitude and longitude of locations, doccument numbers, etc, and the details should come to you through thought association. In English, unschool for a while. Read books about mathmaticians, science fiction that involves a lot of heavy computer science...Do logic puzzles... Take up computer programming and draw parallels between syntax and grammar. Just find ways to work that logical sense you seem to have. That's the great thing about homeschooling. Everything can be a tailored fit. Just figure out what works best for you.

  2. You sound just like I did as a kid. You are clever, but you have trouble with focus and memory. Do you ever hyper-focus though? I find that sometimes, once I'm into a project, I simply cannot pull myself away. Try learning "hands on". This sounds weird, but more study breaks will help. A routine is essential. Don't spread yourself too thin. This is how you are and it won't change. You may have ADD. Stick to the basics and to the subjects you love most. Also, learn how you learn and set yourself up to succeed. If you remember what you hear better than what you read, use more audio visual materials for school. Do the science experiments in the books, don't just read about them. I learn best from reading and re-reading material. I've often copied my notes over and over again. I use a different color ink for different topics. But I also remember what I talk about, so I discuss what I'm learning with friends or my husband. I've gone as far as to make up anagrams, rhymes, jokes and even songs in order to remember something better. I accept that I learn differently from other people. It has not stopped me from learning. In fact, I've often made very high scores on my tests. It has just forced me to be creative. Keep trying. You'll get it.

  3. Maybe you have a misconception about what it takes to learn. Going through material one time usually isn't sufficient to remember it. Notes need to be taken, it needs to be practised over and over, mulled over, returned to periodically.

Let me tell you something: there was a little study done I'm not sure when. A whole bunch of high school seniors did their year-end exams, did very well, then were invited to come back 6 months later or something like that. Can you guess what their average mark was the 2nd time around? 22%. Because they hadn't been practising, they hadn't been returning to the material. It's the only way to learn.

When you try to focus and can't, where does your attention go? What are you feeling? I've worked with kids whose attention was fleeting because of the feelings they had regarding the work they were doing. They didn't feel good, capable, and their attention went elsewhere. Some also have problems with focus on material they just aren't interested in, in which case they need a specific goal to focus on (complete the next 2 pages by 10am) rather than the material. These cases also have to make a point to tell themselves that they will bring their focus back to their goal when it wanders.

Try taking a few books out from the library on how to study or how to learn. They will be able to give you even more tips and ideas.
