I'd like to home school my 9 year old son cause public school just isn't doing him good, and public school is way too much. He has anxiety issues, PDD, and is slightly autistic. What are the steps I need to take to start him on homeschooling in the state of Georgia? I am 35, and have a high school diploma..father of 3. Thank you for your help!!

this is the laws but also you should do research on what curriculum is right for your son i don't recommend getting life pac i tried it in 9th grade and it sucks also i organized my own curriculum and it was great because i could do what i wanted but still be challenged so give it some thought because once you choose a curriculum you are stuck with it (for that year) i hope this helps and if you need NE more help feel free to email me

As long as you have a high school diploma, you can teach your children up to the 9th grade.

  3. the other answers were good, check out your state homeschool laws and comply with them.  but your next step is to get in touch with a local homeschool group.  there are always groups near larger towns, some have particular agendas, some don't, check them out and find what fits your family, but it is very important to connect with other homeschoolers locally so you and your child don't feel alone in this.  next you need to start researching methods.  there are many "methods" of homeschooling, traditional textbook, unit studies, principle approach, classical approach, studies done primarily on the computer, even "un-schooling."  research methods to find a good fit for your situation.  once you have narrowed that down, your curriculum choices will be less to wade through (there are mountains of curriculum available these days to homeschoolers).  we've been homeschooling for 12 years now, you can do it too.

hope this helps some, best of luck to you

  4. MartinGi... gave you some good links, but I don't know where she got the idea that you can only homeschool up to the 9th grade if all you have is a high school diploma.  I couldn't find anything saying that at any certain grade you needed more.

  5. Have you tried getting help for him through Special Education?  There could be accommodations and modifications made for him if he is struggling at school.

I found a page online which suggests all you need to do to start homeschooling is inform the school that you will be doing this, and provide a certain standard of education.  You need to inform the school each year by September 1 if you will continue.  A High School Diploma qualifies you, according to this:

I don't know about Georgia, but here in California I know that one option is to home school through the school district, and they will provide a curriculum and a teacher who will come and check in for a certain number of hours per week (or month?)

There are lots of resources online for home schooling too.

  6. i have a homeschooled son

    go to keystonehighschool.com

    great homeschooling site

  7. Check on www.esa-education.com. They have charter schools in Georgia. I take my autistic/PDD kids to one of their charter schools in Florida and I think it's a good school. You may want to look into that before deciding to home-school. Also go to www.autismspeaks.org and there are message boards where you could post this question and maybe find advice from others in GA who home school.

  8. Here is a great website that explains the laws in GA

    http://www.heir.org/

If you look at the quick links on the top right section of the above page, you will find links to the laws and links to the forms you need to send in.

MartinGirl95 said "As long as you have a high school diploma, you can teach your children up to the 9th grade."

...That is incorrect. You can home school all the way through 12th grade.

Please do not support the HSLDA site, even by clicking on it.

The use scare tactics to increase their membership. They are really nothing more than a far right, fundamental religious fringe group bent on pushing that anti-homosexual, anti-equal right and anti-nonchristian agenda. http://hsislegal.com/
