Home Sweet Aspen looking good against the Las Flores Stakes field
Craig Family Trust’s Home Sweet Aspen is bound to be the Grade 3, $100,000 Las Flores Stakes’ solid favourite after the 4-year-old filly’s brilliant win in her seasonal debut in the Grade 1 Santa Monica Stakes on 28 January, 2012, over the Santa Anita Park’s
synthetic surface over at seven furlongs.
She defeated the likes of Sugarinthemorning by a neck’s margin, and covered the seven furlong sprint in 1 minute and 21.42 seconds, as She’s Cheeky finished third on the day.
John W. Sadler trained Home Sweet Aspen will head the field of Grade 3, $100,000 Las Flores Stakes, run over a distance of six and a half furlongs on 11 March, 2012 at Santa Anita Park. The race has drawn a field of 6, 4-year-old and above fillies and mares.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Candy Ride, out of mare My Gal Groovy by Groovy, is going to pick up five pounds coming off that Santa Monica effort, as she will be slightly cut back in distance from 7 furlongs to 6 ½ furlongs.
Home Sweet Aspen drew post number 4 in the Las Flores Stakes, and she will be coupled with jockey Joel Rosario, who has ridden the filly in all of her 9 career starts, and will guide the 4-year-old in her upcoming race as well.
The Brazilian Bred, Great Hot, has drawn post number 5, and she will be with the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winning jockey, Mike Smith. In her most recent try, Great Hot faded to sixth in the 1 1/16 mile Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes, and will feel comfortable
going over the six and a half furlong sprint.
The Santa Monica Stakes third place finisher, She’s Cheeky is back to fight for the top spot against Home Sweet Aspen, or the 7-year-old mare might extend her remarkable 17 in the money finishes in 23 starts, after winning just 3 times. The Peter Eurton
trained mare was defeated by 2 ½ lengths in the Santa Monica.
Izzy Rules got post number 2, and she will step into graded stakes company for the first time in her career after a three race win streak.
