  1. Digital audio can be carried by two different cables: Optical cable, also called TOSLink, and Digital Coax cable.  Both do an equally good job carrying digital audio signals required for you to get surround sound from your 5.1 receiver.

Digital audio connections are found on DVD players, cable/satellite set top boxes, and video game consoles.

For video, the only digital video cable is HDMI which is only found on upscaling DVD players, blu-ray players, HD capable satellite and cable boxes, and some video game consoles.

Please note that while HDMI is capable of carrying both a digital audio AND video signal, your surround sound receiver is not capable of decoding the signal from the HDMI connection.  It can only pass the signal, the whole signal, to your TV.  So, even if you're using a HDMI cable, you'll still need to connect your device to your receiver with a digital audio cable if you want surround sound.

One popular method for connecting everything together is to connect your receiver to your TV for video, and then connect all of your devices to the receiver.  This way, the receiver acts as your central switch for everything.

  2. You'll need a digital fiber optic cable - this will put true 5.1 surround sound through to your reciever.
