Home Theatre System. We just hooked up a RCA DVD Home theatre system and the tv works on one

We just hooked up a RCA DVD Home theatre system and the tv works on one channel and the DVD part works on another....the speakers work on the DVD channel but not on the part that plays our directv.....how do we get all of this on one channel?!
