Question:

Home Thermostat Troublshooting?

I have a Hunter 44250 thermostat connected to a gas furnace and electric AC unit. I can't get the heat or AC to turn on. The AC was working earlier this week. I shut off the unit at the thermostat to clean the coils on the unit outside. Since then I have been unable to start it

I've checked the breakers and the furnace fan is running (it runs continuously)

When I set the thermostat for heat and set the temp well above the room temp, the heat doesn't start and there is no indication on the furnace LED that it is calling for heat.

When I set the Thermostat to cool and drop the desired temp below the room temp also nothing.

There are 4 wires going to the thermostat unit. can I jump any of these to see if the AC will start?

thanks in advance

  1. If you want to determine if the thermostat is bad, remove the front to expose the mounting plate and wiring. Jumping R-G should start the fan. Jumping R-W should start the furnace. Jumping R-Y should start cooling. Be aware that the indoor fan will not come on when you jump R-Y. Only the outdoor unit will start. If those things do start when jumping, then your thermostat has a problem. If nothing starts when jumping the wire terminals, then you may have a problem with the control board in the furnace, which will mean calling out an A/C tech.

  2. Dear God man! :D ... just call an electrician/AC repair person to come and fix the thing before something gets messed up. It will probably be worth it in the end to call someone out to your place considering how much time and effort you will probably spend trying to figure a way to fix the thing yourself.
