Question:

Home bee infestations?

I live in a 2 story house & the other day we noticed bees flying up to the top rafters. They have built a hive in our walls. When I'm standing on the inside of that wall I can hear them buzzing away. The exterminator is coming out tomorrow. How do I prevent this from happening again? I never dreamed something like this could happen in the city. I'm deathly allergic to them, and terrified out of my mind.

  2. There really isn't a way to prevent them again, it is impossible to get a home that air tight...  saying that, in 20 years of extermination I can't recall hearing of a new hive moving into a home that had gone through that experience once before, though I am sure it does happen...

It's  nice to think a bee keeper could come in and save the hive but in that same 20 years I've referred jobs to beekeepers (different beekeepers too) at least three a year on average and have seen them collect rather than kill the hive only once and this one was set up in an owl box that was nailed against a large tree...still charged the homeowner $250

  3. Ask the exterminator tomorrow how can you prevent them but we have a shortage of bees.  Ask the exterminator to not kill them (they will probably be smoked out).

  4. Take a deep breath.  It's probably paper wasps - I see you're in Carmel and the paper wasps are a plague around here.  If so the exterminator will kill them, there's no need to remove the hive from the house, and the exterminator can install screens and fill holes and generally seal things up so they don't get in again.

If it's honey bees there are people who can get them out without tearing out your walls.  I know people who have left the hive for 15 or more years with none of the horrible predictions about honey coming out of the walls or more bees coming or anything like that.  Again, seal up the holes, fix all of the vent screens and keep it all fixed and they can't come back.

This happens a LOT (both paper wasps and honey bees) and you already have the professionals on the way over.  It's a totally manageable problem so get some sleep.
