Home brew in need of help!!

I make Tooheys Draught home brew kit and have been using 1kg of white sugar in it.

Im looking for a better result as it could taste better.

Any suggestions for RECIPES?

  2. Instead of granulated white sugar try to get unrefined sugar.  

  3. I suggest making beer the old-fashioned way, with malted grain, hops, water, and yeast.  You can probably do it with the kit you have, and it will come out tasting like actual beer.

  4. Simple sugar additions (aka white table sugar) make beer dry, thin, and sometimes cidery in flavor.  Aside from that though I think the culprit is the use of a kit that calls for a simple sugar addition to begin with.  There's plenty of homebrew kits on the market using pure malt extracts and I'd recommend those as a vast improvement in the quality of your homebrew.  

    If you insist on these Toohey's kits then rather than 1kg of sugar I'd replace that with 1kg of light malt extract.  Your fermentation times will probably go up a little bit more but the beer should taste considerably more rich and flavorful.

    Zymurgy is a brewing magazine clearly geared towards advanced homebrewers, I wouldn't recommend it to somebody brewing with kits (no offense).  If you would like a magazine though then Brew Your Own is a bit more "noob friendly".

  6. When you say 1 kg "white sugar" I'm assuming you mean dextrose?

    It's been a while since I've been involved in zymurgy as a hobby, but if I recall dextrose/corn sugar was a adjunct that would of course boost alcohol content but at a much cheaper price than maltose.  We mainly used white sugar as a finishing agent in carbonating what was otherwise a strictly malt based brew.

    There was a magazine called Zymurgy that was published for many years and may well still be in existence --  online or however -- that offered great recipes and competitive resources.  Let me look to see if it still exists....  Yep..  See below.  Zymurgy magazine has been around for decades.  If the link I found is to the original, it's an excellent resource.  Cheers!
