Home duos finish day-1 of 2012 European Championship Finals with 4-1 record – Volleyball news
The 2012 CEV Men’s Beach Volleyball European Championship Final started off on Wednesday, May 30 in Prague, the Netherlands.
The home duos displayed wonderful action in front of the local fans and finished the day with 4-1 record. The hosts dropped only one match but grabbed success in the other four matches. Large number of local volleyball enthusiasts came to support the home
duos at the Beach of Scheveningen, which provided the backdrop for the matches.
In the first encounter of the day in Pool J, the hosts had a tough challenge to cope with the top-seeded team of the competition. German Brink-Reckermann crossed ways with Rademaker-Oude Elferink of Netherland and scored an easy win in two sets. The set
scores were 2-0 (21-10, 21-16) and the match rounded off in 36 minutes.  
Following the loss of opening set, the duo of Brouwer and Meeuwsen put Netherland back on track. They took on Austrian pairing of Müllner and Wutzl and downed them in just two sets, 2-0 (21-11, 21-16). Brouwer and Meeuwsen formed good combination and perfectly
complimented each other. They quickly traded places and did not miss a chance to score points. The visiting duo became irresistible and eventually accepted the better status of hosts.
In the third match, Netherlands’ Stiekema and Varenhorst launched full authority on visiting team from Switzerland, which consisted of Gabathuler-Gerson. The Dutch started out well and did not allow the opposite team to come up. The match decision was out
in just 31 minutes as the hosts posted 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) on board.
Third-seeded Dutch pair Boersma E.-Spijkers came into stride with Denmark’s Soderberg-Hoyer, A. The visiting duo had a huge difference ranking points as it was ranked 30 in the tournament. Nonetheless, both players on Denmark’s team put up a nice show of
volleyball. They resisted in full force and created enough trouble for Dutch team. In the first set, hosts claimed success with only 2-point advantage at 21-19.
Likewise, the second set was a point-to-point battle. Soderberg-Hoyer could not achieve success but received good applause from the audience. They lost the second set by trailing behind with three points (18-21) and also dropped the decision.
In the last match of day-1, Netherlands’ top duo showcased it skills. The second-seeded Nummerdor-Schuil defeated Giginoglu-Gögtepe H. of Turkey, 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-11). Dutch pair made a good start to the match and seized first frame.
In the next set, two teams staged an eye-catching action. Turks came on top with two points, 21-19. Nummerdor-Schuil managed to overcome the rival in third decisive set and pulled off success in the match.
At the end of the first day of 2012 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Finals, Netherlands bagged four win and suffered the loss of one match.
