I'm suffering from depression and a phobia of being sick this has made me unable to go to school full time and when i do go into school i end up not being able to do work or not eating for the whole day. im finishing school and my gcse exams in 2 months i'll have finished i know you may think can't she survive that long but that answer is no my attendance is below 60% and i can't force myself into school without making me even more ill to the point where i might have to end up in hospital and get no education at all. i've already been entered for exams through the school so would this mean it won't be possible for me to turn to home education at such a late date in my school education? if not do you have any ideas on what i can do don't say hang in there because i can't unless you know how it feels don't offer stupid advice.

  1. You or probably your parents need to talk to your school. They can keep you registered and let you work at home, you get marked on the register as studying off site and they continue to be funded for your place. Perfectly doable and from their POV they would MUCH rather you take and pass your GCSEs making their league tables look good, than you get too sick to take or pass anything, dragging their averages down.

    Good luck!

  2. You need to sit down and talk to you teachers and headmaster about this. Also involve a physician who could competantly diagnose this problem you have. The United States has laws providing for those who have special needs and by law school are supposed to accomodate them or they are liable. I am sure the UK is not any different.

For students with learning difficulties, an injury/RSI (repetitive strain injury), or a disability there is help offered in these forms:

Extra-time (the amount depends on the severity of the learning difficulty, disability or injury; up to 25% extra time can be granted by the centre, over that permission must be sought from the awarding body)

An amanuensis (somebody [normally a teacher]) types or handwrites as the student dictates, this is normally used when the student cannot write due to an injury or disability.

A word processor (without any spell checking tools) can be used by students who have trouble writing legibly or who are unable to write quickly enough to complete the exam

A different format exam paper (large print, Braille, printed on coloured paper etc.)

A 'reader' (a teacher/exam invigilator can read out the words written on the exam, but they cannot explain their meaning)

A different room (sometimes due to a disability a student can be placed in a room by themselves, this also happens when an amanuensis is used, so as not to disturb the other candidates)

There are other forms of help available, but these are the most commonly used.

  3. I have home educated my girls for close to 20 yrs now.

My middle daughter just can't see herself going out to a public school, so I think I understand at least a little bit about what you are feeling.

This may sound silly, but have you tried talking to your school to see if it is at all possible to do your work on-line, or if you could have your teachers email you your lessons for the week, you could do them at home and just drop them off at the school at the end of the week. Also, would your doctor be willing to write a letter to the school verifying your condition? This way they know its 'for real'. They will probably require you to come in to take your final tests, but might be willing to set you up a time where you could come in without a lot of people around which might make you feel more comfortable.

You might be surprised at how willing they would be to work with you to help you finish up, especially since you are so close to being done.

Of course, there's always the possibility that they won't work with you. If this is the case, you might check to see if there are any alternative programs available where you live that would let you finish school from home. It might mean repeating some classes, but that might be better than not finishing.

I really hope you can get everything worked out!

  4. My son got sick a few years ago. Something about the school wasn't right, that was the only place he had problems. He was in 3rd grade. He got so sick that he stopped eating and  missed alot ofdays . I even had teachers ask me why he lost his color, he was very pale. He has always been skinny and he lost weight which was very bad.He is in 5th grade now and is 11 soon to be twelve and a size 10 is to big in the waist he is so skinny. It was horrible I would cry at night from worry and we stayed at the doctor trying to find something to help. we did get some acid and ulcer meds to help his stomach to where he could at least eat. If you are getting sick from being there you should definitely try something else. Going to public school can be hard on some kids and that's fine. But take care of yourself and see what you need to do to home scool so you can stay healthy.
