Question:

Home made baby food????

I want to make home made baby food for my son. I already made him carrots (which i steamed and then pureed in a food processor) how do i make things like squash (i'm pretty sure that i would just bake it then puree it as well) also what things do you have to add liquid to and what kind of liquid do i use? any websites you have found would also be helpful! Thanks in advance!

I actually bake 2 large butternutt squashes sliced in half, 2 large sweet potatos in the micro, and 1 bag each of frozen green beans, carrots, and peas..and steam them.  After all is cooked I process everything together so that it is all in one and the baby gets all nutrients combined.  Then I put the processed veggies in ice cube trays and freeze, without having to add any liquid at all.  Get the trays with covers so you can stack them.  That whole recipe makes me 30 days worth of dinners for my almost 7 month old.  He eats 4 cubes for dinner (1 cube=1oz) and then I sprinkle a little cereal on top after microwaving the cubes for 1.25 minutes.  He loves it, and actually is annoyed with regular jarred food if we travel somewhere since I can't travel with frozen cubes that easily!

    1 night of veggie cooking well worth it for his nutrition, plus it costs about 50% less for those 30 meals vs. if you had to buy the jars!

  4. How to cook butternut squash for your baby

    Butternut squash is extremely versatile and can be cooked in a variety of ways.

    Baked whole. Pre-heat your oven to 350 deg F (180 deg C) and place the squash on an ungreased baking sheet. Pierce it all over with a fork (to allow the steam to escape - you do NOT want this exploding in your oven!) then bake for about an hour, until tender. Halve lengthways, then scoop out the seeds and fibres. Spoon the flesh from the peel and it's ready to eat or add to your recipes.

    Baked halved. Cut the squash in half lengthwise, remove all seeds and fibrous material, then brush the cut surface with olive oil. Bake at 350 deg F (180 deg C) for around 30-40 mins, until tender.

    Steamed. Cut into cubes and then steam for around 8 to 10 mins, until tender.

    Boiled. Cut into cubes, just cover with water, then simmer gently unti cooked (8-10 mins). Add the cooking water back into your recipe to make use of the nutrients that may have leached into it during the cooking time.

    Barbecued/foil wrapped. Place cubes of butternut squash on a piece of buttered foil, then bring the edges together to form a parcel. Pop on the barbecue (or put in the oven) until tender. For extra flavour, add a little cinnamon before you seal the parcels (and for a REALLY yummy treat, put some sliced apple in, too!)


  5. You can mix formula or breastmilk with any foods that you puree.  First you want to steam the foods, mash them, and if they are still too thick then add the milk.  Water is fine too.
