Home made citrus spray to stop barking?

My dog barks all the time & I can't make him stop. He's a 7 month old bichon who will stare & you & bark continuously to try to get you to chase him.

I've tried to ignore him for 10 minutes, & he never stopped. I also have neighbors so can't just let him bark.

Shaking a can with coins or spraying him with water just makes it worse. He thinks it's a game & barks even more. . .

I've heard you can spray them with a home made citrus solution to make them stop barking.

How do you make a good spray?

Do you just squeeze some lemons into water or get lemon juice to mix with water?

I'm also worried about the citrus stinging his eyes.

Q1: Anyone know how to make citrus sprays?

Q2: Does this work?

Q3: other ideas?

  1. if its really that bad i would try a shock collar. its not the best training method in the world, but its humane and it corrects the dog when you cant. and i normally wouldn't recommend it but this is an extreme case.

  2. I don't know about a home made citrus spray but there is an electronic collar which, instead of shocking your dog, emits a mist of a citrus spray which the dog finds unpleasant and distracts the dog.

  3. No, it should not be used, can hurt a dogs eyes, will sting them, ever squeeze a lemon and it gets in your eyes, a dogs eye is more sensitive....

he is playing with you and wants your attention....get a rolled up newspaper, for real, and each time he starts a tap on the nose or rump,do not hit, stomp, yell or kick,  just simple gentle voice tones, good taps, gentle ones and good firm no, no.

keep this up,he will soon learn when you pickup the paper he is to stop...dogs are smart, and will learn....

it will take time, love and lots of patience, but I bet you will see the difference in him once you start this type of training...spraying and shaking cans will not train a dog to stop barking...

gentle loving training will win out every time....

    good luck

he loves you, and is just showing he wants to be with you and wants to play......

  4. they have at petco..citronella shock collars, minus the shock. It  sprays a shot  of citronella and dogs hate the smell and they stop barking.
