Should a runner be allowed to knock the catcher silly to jar the ball lose long after the catcher has the ball and awaits him at home plate? We are talking a full 3 seconds with the ball secured and the plate is blocked.

[ Not a force play of couse ]

[ Exclude - Plays in which the ball arrives around the save time or bobbled balls by the cather ]

  1. All of you answering that the runner has the right to the basepath could not be more wrong.  The asker clearly stated that the catcher has the ball in hand waiting for the runner.  In such an instance, the basepath nor the base is entitled to the runner.  The runner is actually obligated to AVOID a fielder who is making a play or is holding the ball.  Home plate collisions are a little different.  As long as the runner is going for the plate, and does not lower his shoulder or does not lead with his helmet it is a legal play in MLB.  In leagues at some lower levels, this is not a legal play.

  2. uhhhhh no i got ran over a couple days ago and im 14 and i got up and hit the kid and we both got ejected

  3. Fair its part of the game, whats the point if the runner cant  try and get the ball out of his hand, i get if the team of the catcher is winning like by7 or 10 runs no don't do it , but if its the  go ahead run then go ahead get it

  4. The catcher has gear on the runner only has a helmet. The Smart catchers wear the helmet and mask during a play at the plate, plus chest protector and shin guards. If he is blocking then he should be prepared to be run over. When he has the ball that long he should be in a good position to protect himself, its the bang bang ball gets there at the same time and he is trying to sweep the ball into the tag when he gets hit where he is at most risk for injury.

  5. If the catcher is blocking the plate, that means he is in the basepath.  A runner has the right of way when he is in the basepath.  A runner is called automatically out if he leaves the basepath.  So what do you propose the runner should do?  If the catcher wants to stand in the basepath he has to be prepared fo the consequences.  Absolutely fair.

  6. it is part of the game, but i think you should at least make it clean.. not with your spikes up or anything..

speaking of collisions.. it always reminds me of the johnny estrada/darin erstad collision.. it was big dude..

i remember estrada had a concussion and everything.

  7. it is totally fair cause it is the catchers choice to stand there waiting for the runner to knock right into him and it his job to hold on to the ball plus it the runner probaly wouldnt go if the catcher already had the ball for 3 whole seconds

  8. The catcher has the option to NOT block the plate, but stand aside and place the tag as the runner goes by.  If he chooses to place himself in harms way, he is fair game.  The runner has a right to do what is necessary to reach the plate.

  9. totally fair just plow therw him
