  4. It figures! You’ve already spilt something on your new carpet. It seems like the more careful you are, the more mess eventually happens. But not to worry. You can get rid of stains on carpets.  But what path will you choose? Will you consult a professional carpet cleaner or will you try and wipe the stain out yourself? Generally speaking, the smaller the stain, the more likely you’ll be able to get rid of it using your own home remedies. Removing stains on carpets can either be easy or tedious depending on the size of the stain and how much time has passed since the stain was made. Some stains on carpets will come out easy while others will require multiple applications of spot remover solution. It is advisable when cleaning stains on carpets, to blot out an area by pressing a white paper towel into the stain and to continue cleaning this way. This is a safer way to clean than scrubbing in a circular motion, which threatens to destroy the texture of the carpet.

Some cleaning solutions for removing spots include dish washing liquid, household ammonia (one tablespoon mixed with water), hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl-rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, as well as other commercially sold carpet cleansers. Along with these solutions, tools such as paper towels, a spray bottle and a brick (for keeping the paper towel in place) will be helpful when removing stains on carpets.

When cleaning greasy marks, try and blot out the stain with a white paper towel. You can use isopropyl-rubbing alcohol to clean the cloth or paper towel. Be careful not to use too much alcohol or let it sink too deeply into the carpet. For surface stains on carpets, blot out the stain moving only one direction at a time.

For any water-based spills, a wet vacuum is very valuable in quickly disposing of large foreign material. If the stain has already dried, you can saturate the affected area with tap water, but remember not to completely soak it. Let the water remain for about a minute and then start blotting out any of these types of stains on carpets.

Stronger solutions including dish washing liquid and other detergents can be used for tougher stains on carpets. First blot out the stain and then rinse the stain and all the solution out of the carpet with tap water from a spray bottle. Tougher solutions like hydrogen peroxide can be used to moisten the stained area before blotting.

While cleaning your carpets on your own can be rigorous and troubling, it will save you money! Most professional carpet cleaners charge by the hour and don’t mind taking their time to get those tough stains on carpets out. It might be worth at least trying to clean those stains on carpets yourself before hiring a professional
