Home-runs rain as Baltimore Orioles defeat Cincinnati Reds 7-5 – MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 on Sunday, June 26 at the Oriole Park, Camden Yards in Baltimore.
The Orioles came back strongly after Saturday’s thrashing at the hands of the Reds, with their hitters doing most of the damage. The Baltimore side took a decisive five-run lead as early as the fourth innings with four runs coming in the fourth inning alone.
Blake Davis got the scoring underway for the Orioles in the third innings with his first run for the night. Derrek Lee swept one to the left in the fourth innings which ended 400 feet into the stands, completing his sixth home-run of the season. Adam Jones
and Vladimir Guerrero completed their runs subsequently. Homer Bailey, the starting pitcher for the Reds, looked shaky after the massive hit and failed to stage a comeback. Mark Reynolds cashed onto this and unleashed one off his bat. The 440 feet hit was
Reynolds’s 14th home-run of the season. The Orioles were now comfortably places at 5-0 and had virtually ended the night for the Reds.
The Reds nevertheless did not lose hope. Brandon Phillips came out at bat and offered all he had learned during his nine years in professional baseball. Standing calm under immense pressure, he connected one hit towards the centre. Sweetly coming off his
bat, the hit distanced 420 feet and silenced the home crowd for once. The Reds gained momentum from this hit and the sixth innings yielded results for them. Chris Heisey and Miguel Cairo added one run each in the sixth innings before Phillips continued from
his fifth inning feat and added his second run for the night, taking the score to 5-4 and putting the Reds in a fighting position.
The Reds reorganised and became upbeat for the contest. They brought in Jose Arredondo and Aroldis Chapman as relief pitchers for the sixth and seventh innings respectively but neither could contain the Orioles scoring and once again failed to compliment
their batters. Both pitchers leaked one run each. Blake Davis scored for the Orioles in the sixth innings and Luke Scott showed his hitting power with his ninth home-run of the season, with a mammoth 410 feet hit in the seventh. The Orioles were again three
runs ahead, with the score at 7-4.
The Reds could not really gain any momentum thereon. Ramon Hernandez’s 427 feet homer in the ninth inning was the only resilience from the Reds but it was a little too late. By that time, the Orioles had already sensed victory.
The Orioles’ pitchers must be given recognition for containing the flow which the Reds started. Jeremy Guthrie won his third game of the season after nine losses amid his five strike-outs. The relief pitchers complimented their hitters and it was a good
quality team-work at display.
The Orioles won the three game series 2-1, their win-loss record improving to 35-40 now.
