My friend was home-schooled until the age of 17. What is the best, most appropriate way to list this on a resume or job application?

  1. The oddness of his educational background will dog him from job to job until he eventually starts college. The sooner he continues his education, the better. He needs to get into a community college even if only part time. Once he excels in college/university, (like I expect he will because homeschooling is equivalent or better, in my opinion than the traditional schooling), he will be fine.

    Good luck

  2. If he really wants a job tell him not to just have one standard resume. Tailor the resume to the job, list the subjects he studied and skills he learnt that would be useful for that job. Do some research on the company and position so he'll better understand what they're looking for.

Looking through a pile of applications the ones where the applicant has made a real effort always stand out. You're usually looking at a big pile and step 1 is to cut out the obviously unfit, and then step 2 is to reduce it to the number you want to interview. Your application has to get you an interview where you can show the employer how great you are otherwise it's a waste of time.

  3. Instead of the standard format of what school, year, program etc., a short paragraph or point form statement ccould be composed under the Education section of a resume which states that the applicant was home-schooled, and some of the skills, opportunities, or interests that this flexibility allowed you to develop.  Employers looking for creative, intelligent, self-directed employees are completely open to home schoolers, imho.

  4. Name of high school:  Homeschool

Address:  (the address of his/her house)

That's how I always do it and I've never had any problems with it.  After those two lines, you can go into GPA, activities, or whatever else you want/need just the same as you would if you had gone to a public school.
