  1. A high percentage of homeschoolers go to college.  Many colleges actively recruit them, and homeschoolers have attended Ivy League colleges as well.  You apply to college just like any other student would, submitting transcripts, SAT/ACT scores and perhaps a portfolio.  If you are involved in a homeschool association, they probably address issues regarding college AND some of the other members are probably experienced and could answer your questions for you.

As for sports, in some states homeschoolers can still participate in extracurricular activities within the public school.  However, there are community programs as well-little league baseball, Upwards basketball, etc.  You can also inquire about playing on a team for a private school, and many homeschool associations form their own teams (as well as offering many other activities).

If you study hard and make good grades, your chances of getting into college are not negatively effected by homeschooling-you have just as much chance as anyone else.  My oldest child is 10, and we have been doing our research to be sure she is well prepared for college.  She wants to be a veterinarian, and the process to become on is very competitive.

I hope this helps, and wish you the best!

  2. Abby, these are the concerns of many home schoolers as yourself. You would apply to colleges the same way as if you were in public school. That is why I recomend good record keeping. As far as sports do you have a home school organization to work with? They some times offer sports. (See link below for home school organizations.) Also, I have know of some private or Christian School that will let you play on their team. You may have to be a member of their church. Another idea is to check with the Y or Boy/girls Club in your area they may offer sports. As far as getting into College, many home schoolers have a better chance if they have good grades. Home schooling teaches self dicipline and this is what a lot of Colleges are looking for. I hope I have been of some help to you. If you have any other questions about home schooling please e-mail me through my web site listed below.

  3. Do you have a college you are interested in? If so, check their website. Many Universities actively recruit home schoolers. Many home schoolers play club sports but sports are  not necessary to get into college.

A large majority of home schoolers attend college and many start acquiring credits while still in high school. Both my sons, ages 14, and 16 have taken classes at our community college.

The classes are free to high school students and they count just as if you were in college.

I hope you find all the answers you are looking for.

    Best of Luck to You!

  4. You would contact the schools of your choice and ask them what their requirements are for homeschoolers that wsh to apply to.  Keep a portfolio of your work and a list of all the activities/volunteer work you have participated in.  You will also need to take the ACT/SAT and have your scores sent the the colleges you are interested in.  It is a good idea to get a study book for whichever test you take (you can take both) and start doing the practice problems and practice tests.  Plan on giving yourself plenty of time to take the test!  You can take it more than one time which could improve your score.  You will also need to contact the financial aid office at every school to see what scholarships and grants are available to you.  I got one of my scholarships because I simply asked the question, "Is there any scholarship I can get with my ACT test score?"  That's it.  And the lady told me there was and I applied for it.  All you have to do is ask.  And don't be afraid to ask because there is free money for the asking and it might as well go to you, right?

As for sports, you would just keep a list of all the sports you have been involved on.  You could even count sports as health/phys. ed and ask coaches to give you a grade or their signature as proof you were 'in their class' (aka on their team).

Your chances of getting into college as a homeschooler are  almost greater than getting into college as a public schooler.  Colleges love homeschoolers.  They are more likely to graduate than public schoolers, they typically have higher GPA's, they are hard workers, they and they love learning.
