Are there any home-schooled people here?

I mean ones that are not in it for religion. I am home-schooled and have looked at others like me on here but none of them are in it for any other reason. The ones I see are all talking about god and violin lessons and choir practice. I have never even been to church. So if you are out there please respond.

  1. I'm homeschooled and religious but that doesn't mean I talk about God all the time or even consider violin lessons and choir practice. Where did that idea come from?

It is so annoying how people automatically jump to conclusions - I'm homeschooled and religious, therefore I must go around dressed like a 1650's puritan and I talk about my choir all the time. Our church doesn't even have a choir.

And by the way, we are taught at home because our father had a terrible experience in boarding school and Mom was constantly bullied at her school - they didn't want us to go through it all like they did. They tell us all the time that even if we weren't religious, they would homeschool us.

Also, religion has nothing really to do with homeschooling - out of our entire church (750 ppl), we are the only homeschoolers.

Interesting though, I'm very surprised how you've never met someone who homeschools but it not religious. I know loads of ppl like that!

  2. Yes. We're home educated (unschooled) and no, we are not religious. I've never been to church either.

  4. Atheist homeschooling family here.

Secular homeschoolers ARE a minority, but we're not as small a minority as some might think. We're just not as vocal and/or regimented as religious homeschoolers, so people often don't realize that we're here.

  5. My family does not homeschool for the religious aspect.  We would have recieved that from church anyway.  We homeschooled for the following reasons:

    Better education

    More family time

    Better socialization chances

    Less/no peer pressure

    Real life experiences

  6. I'm homeschooled, and I am CERTAINLY NOT in it for religion. I don't even go to church, and honestly I'm not even sure there is a god, let alone that he said I need to be homeschooled. None of my science classes ever taught Creation, none of my history classes ever began with the bible tale of adam and eve, and none of my literature classes included memorizing bible verses. I am homeschooled strictly for educational purposes. Not religious.

  7. Non-religious homeschoolers are a minority.  Often military kids who travel or live in distant locations.  A few from bad school systems.  A few with learnding disabilities.

I hope schooled and unschooled just for learning purposes.

  8. I have a belief system, but I'm not homeschooling because of it. Google pagan homeschooling, secular homeschooling, or atheist homeschooling, and you will get a TON of hits.

I think overall, NHERI states that 76% of homeschoolers are doing so for religious reasons, but a similar percentage also stated academic concerns, so it's rather simplistic to argue that people do it for ONE reason, it's likely a bunch of reasons.

I hope that you can look beyond someone's religious beliefs and be friends with them regardless.

  9. The homeschool folks that I know are in it for:

    1) A better education

    2) Improved socialization (I'm not kidding)

    3) Values education

    4) Idealogical reasons (freedom, liberty, non-revisionist history, rejection of the socialist agenda, etc.).

We are a Christian family, but our primary reasons for homeschooling are those listed above.  It is just a bonus for us that religious freedom comes along with the package.

What do Violin Lessons and Choir Practice have to do with your question?  Music: sounds like part of a well rounded education to me.

HS Mom: Yes! Us too... our's is also gifted.  Was in the gifted program at Public School.  His gifted ed. teacher (before we started homeschooling) bragged at the end of the year that "her" gifted kids learned 10 new words.  Ten! Not that day, or week or the past month.  That was the amazing accomplishment for the YEAR!  Now we have our own IEP called homeschooling - it is very individualized and crazy challenging but it really works... Our 9th grade student's schedule: Ancient Literature (Homer, Iliad, etc.), Journalism Club, Speech Club, Algebra II, Spanish, U. S. History, Physical Science, college entrance exam prep, plus pursuit of personal interests in web design, computer graphics and animation, computer game development, genealogy, backpacking, cartooning, heirloom seed conservation, church activities.  This year's reading list includes: A Day in the Life of Ivan Danisovitch (sp?), Animal Farm, 1984, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Of Mice and Men, Brief History of Time, the Koran, the Bible, Asimov's Foundation series, etc.... Regular periodical reading includes: National Geographic, Forbes, Inc., Mother Earth, Smithsonian, Field and Stream.  Plus, our student has his own small business that earns him a small income.

Match that Public School!  In it only for religious reasons: HA!

  10. For us home school is simple. Yes we wanted a christian education for our children but more important than that was a safe environment where our children could get the best education possible. When we started last year my daughter had been assaulted by other children on the bus and nothing was ever done about it.  The principal told us that if I was concerned about her getting bullied on the bus then I needed to drive her to school. I did one better I pulled her out!

I believe that bullying is not a good thing and it does not make children any more socialized speaking from experience (as a bullied kid myself) I am much quieter  than my 5 other siblings were and still am (4 of them any way the bravest one passed away in Iraq). I was not going to stand by and let my babies endure the same torments that I was put through. I was not going to watch another child tear apart my children. I was in 3rd grade when it started and for the next 7 years I was tormented daily with names such as cockroach and insect (big cheap glasses). I will not let the same happen again.

So yes while my kids are getting a "religious" education it's not my motivating factor.

  11. what is your question? I mean, to what are we to respond?

You asked if there are homeschoolers here.

    The answer is yes.

Other than that, I don't see a question...

  12. I am religious, but that is not why I am being homeschooled. I have a medical illness that makes it difficult to attend school regularly so it is easier just to homeschool.

  13. I'm not, but I wish I were, though. The scheds and the pressure sucks, and I barely learn anything I like. I keep asking my parents to get me into homeschool but they keep on putting it off for the next year, they say I need the friends and the personality... come on. Some people are built some ways and others differently.

It must be great... you could really order your priorities that way.

  14. Our primary reason for HS'ing is not based on our faith.  It's because our DS is profoundly gifted and no B&M school setting will work for him.

You are making a blanket statement that just isn't true.  There are plenty of people here, and in the HS community at large who are "not in it for religion".

If you want to connect with other HS'ed students, then find a secular HS group in Yahoo Groups.  That is a better place to find online aquaintances than Y!Answers.

  15. Beware of being too presumptuous. Just because many in here talk about their churches, doesn't mean they are "in it for religion." They homeschool and happen to be religious; they don't homeschool because they're religious. There's a difference.

And yes, I've seen responses in here from non-religious homeschooled students. They do exist. But since most people profess some sort of religious affiliation, it stands to reason that most homeschoolers will profess some sort of religious affiliation.

  16. We are conservative Christians, but do not consider ourselves "religious".

Being religious, and being a person of faith are not the same.

I can religiously attend a church, and never choose to  live according to my faith, or how Christ taught us how to live.

Going to Church does not automatically make you a believer.

Home schooling is about family, Church is about extended family, and friends.

Church is about community, and supporting each other in times of joy, and need.

We home school for many reasons, but one of the main reasons being we simply do not believe in the conventional education system.

  17. We are Christian, but we do not home school BECAUSE we are Christian. Someone who happens to be a Christian homeschooler does NOT Make them "In it for religion".....we would be Christian even if we were in Public school-would we then be in public school for religion too?

    Hi!

  18. I am not religious either, but I have a relationship with Christ. There is a huge difference.

To answer your question, yes, there are home schooled families who have all different types of beliefs. I don't know how to tell you to find them though, sorry. I am sure as the day goes by you will get some responses!

    Blessings!
