Question:

Home schooling in Colorado compulsory age?

What does it mean when it says this:

"Compulsory School Age:7 and under the age of 17. Also "appl[ies] to a six-year-old child who has been enrolled in a public school in the first [or higher] grade," unless the "parent or legal guardian chooses to withdraw such child." Compulsory attendance age for those homeschooling under Option 1 is from age 7 to 16."

Does this mean you can only be home schooled until 16...or what?

Thanks.

  1. It means if you homeschool below 7 and above 16 are not manditory.

Most parents who choose to homeschool, however, tend to start young.  Sometimes as young as 2 or 3 but usually by 4.  Most homeschoolers can read, write and do simple math by 6 (first grade entry level).

Some kids choose to homeschool year round.

This is why the statistics show the typical homeschooler is 2-3 grades ahead of public schoolers by age 9 and stay there.

Many homeschoolers are applying to college at age 16, some are already in college at 16.

  2. The wording really isn't any different for those in public school: you MUST be in some form of schooling from age 7-16. Doesn't mean you have to stop school at 16--it just means you can "drop out" at that point and not get your diploma.

  3. That means that if you're ready, you can graduate at 16.  No formal schooling is required after that point, though you can continue if need be.
