Home speakers

Question

I bought a house that has ceiling speakers in almost every room and speakers on the patio. There is a massive bunch of speaker wires that come out of the wall in the room that where all the central audio/video equipment is located...my problem is I have no idea which speaker wires are connected to the ceiling speakers throughtout the house. Besides going in the attic and yanking on the wires and having someone in the house tell me which wires are moving as I go to all the speaker locations in the attic, which seems ridiculous and still doesn't test the speakers to see if they are working. How do I do a simple test to the speakers to find out if they are working and where they are located?
