In order to proceed with the adopation need money for a home study which can cost 700 or so dollars. My question is, can I have some type of fund raiser for this purpose? Is it legal and will a permit be required? Haven't brought this topic up with my lawyer yet. Live in Texas

  1. I don't have the answer but i do have another suggestion. I have a friend that did an adoption for child that was out of  the country. They (her and her husband) went to their church and to their surprise.......The church raised every dime. All they paid for was the plane tickets if i am not mistaken......Try it!

  2. We're currently home studied and ready for kids, and we did some concurrent placements (foster kids who could've became permanent had they not gone back to their parents) and at one time, I thought that the subsidy money would be enough to keep us going. Here's what I learned:

You will be losing time from work, and time off of work means less money. It will probably be upwards of 6-8 weeks before you see any subsidy money. In our case, the kids were always gone before we got the money that was supposed to help support them.

Save the money. Have all your bills caught up (especially those attached to anything that can be shut off, repossessed, or foreclosed on) before any placement, because you may miss a month or two after placement of your child(ren). We almost lost our condo after our last two were through here.

Adoption is a wonderful thing for all involved, but for your own sanity and the sake of the kids, prepare yourself financially.

  3. I am sorry to be rude, but if you cannot afford a homestudy, how can you afford to adopt?  How can you afford to raise a child?  How can you afford an attorney?

The homestudy fee is the least of your expenses.

I know of no law preventing fund raising to raise the fee for a homestudy, but I have heard of families not qualifying to adopt because they are not financially stable.
