Set up is PS3 hdmi and HD-A35 hdmi into Yamaha RX-V661 (hdmi 1.2a) out hdmi to sharp 52" lcd 120hz. this seems the cleanest, best? Direct tv hdmi to TV optic to reciever.

  1. it will decode and output through the hdmi. your reciver will take it from there and if it can read these formats it will play them. if not then switch to pcm mode for your best audio.

  2. If you are trying to hear Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD you will need to connect the 6 individual channel outputs from your A35 to the Yamaha's Multi Ch Inputs. The RX-V661 cannot decode those formats so you must decode them in the DVD player and then stream them to the Yamaha amplification circuits directly, bypassing the V661's processing.

Everything else in your set-up looks good.
