Home theater front speaker not loud enough?

Question

Does anyone else have this problem? When playing movies the actor's voices are sometimes barely audible so I turn the volume up. then suddenly the special effects are heard and the loud noise is unbearable. is that the way Home theaters are supposed to work?

Get a new center channel speaker.  Most store bought centers are too small and/or not sensitive enough to hear over the mains or subs.  (assuming you've tried adjusting the levels of each speaker) So either look around and buy a better one with higher sensitivity or.....get one of Bills.  Follow the link......      http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/SLA.html

When you set up your home theater , did you set the speaker levels?

Sounds like you need to set speaker levels so that they all play at the same level, your center speaker should really play louder than the other speakers because it handles most of the movie information.

it is possible that you have to change the mode in which the movie is projected...for example my surrond spund system has settings for movies, dolby 2 channel, rock , pop, etc.......

Some receivers have capability to raise or lower the levels on individual channels, (speakers). Typically the complaint the opposite, as most  all the sound comes from the center speaker. Check the receiver manual or receiver menu setting and see if you can adjust individual levels. If so raise the center ch and lower the surrounds.

DOES IT HAVE A FADE WHERE U CAN CONTROL THE VOLUME OF THAT PARTICULAR SPEAKER? BALANCE DOES LEFT TO RIGHT. FADE DOES FRONT TO BACK.

the front and left front speakers are not supposed to be that loud its the Center channel that all the voice comes out of if your reciever is set to dolby prologic II .

On a 5.1 system, every receiver must have controls to add/subtract some volume from the center, left-rear and right-rear speakers.

Check your manual.

A Radio Shack SPL meter ($39) and a copy of Avia or Digital Video Essentials will help you correctly set your speaker levels.

Note: Even with a properly calibrated system, some DVD's are mastered with the center speaker too quiet. You may need to bump the center speaker volume up a bit.

My first question would be, do you have a center speaker? That will help whole lot in being able to hear the vocal parts of any movie.  Hope this helps you out!!
